Reading on a man in California and an investigation, I wonder what this is about ?
http://www.calwatchdog.com/2013/06/11/sen-ron-calderon-speaks-fbi-investigation-continues/
Following the June 5 FBI raid on his Capitol offices, Sen. Ron Calderon, D-Montebello, made a really brief appearance before the Senate convened for session.
However, Calderon revealed nothing about the raids, part of an ongoing corruption investigation, according to the FBI. Calderon instead referred all questions of substance to his attorney Mark Geragos, famous for his representation of Scott Peterson, now on death row, convicted of murdering his wife, Laci, and their unborn baby.
“My family and I have gone through a lot in the last several days,” Calderon said. “It’s been very stressful. It’s been very hard on all of us. We’re all very anxious to put this behind us and to carry on normal life.”
Calderon spoke for about 60 seconds.
“I have a lot of my own questions,” Calderon said. ”My intention at this point is to do my job I was elected to do, attend my hearings, get my bills passed out of committee to the floor and do the work of the state.”
The investigation
More details of the cases have been revealed. In April, the FBI also searched Pacific Hospital of Long Beach and Industrial Pharmacy Management in Long Beach, which had hired Calderon’s brother Thomas Calderon as a consultant. Thomas Calderon is a former Assemblyman.
Additionally, another consulting client, the Central Basin Water District, paid Thomas Calderon $10,000 a month as a consultant and another $140,000 per year as a consultant to a subcontractor, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Central Basin Water District has its own troubles. The water district is made up of 44 cities and water utilities in southeast L.A. County. The cities have been in a dispute with the Central Basin Water District over management issues which allegedly impact water rates.
Last year, Downey Mayor Mario Guerra testified before the Joint Legislative Audit Committee about the mismanagement. But the committee, led by then-Assemblyman Ricardo Lara, D- Bell Gardens, turned the tables on Guerra and ordered an audit of Downey’s Department of Public Works.
Lara is now in the Senate and rumored to also have been subpoenaed in the FBI case.
U.S. Rep. Grace Napolitano, D-Calif., pushed for an investigation and audit of the Central Basin Water District in 2009, the LA Times reported. Napolitano said she has heard complaints for more than a decade from cities she represents about the agency’s lack of transparency and questionable spending of public funds,” according to the LA Times.
“In particular, Napolitano questioned how the district spent $5.6 million in federal funds she helped secure to build infrastructure for a regional system to recycle water.”
But the audit did not happen, and Napolitano blamed Sen. Calderon for thwarting efforts to make it happen.
*NOTE again from above:

Charles M. Calderon (born March 12, 1950) is an American politician who served in both chambers of the California State Legislature.
Calderon was first elected to the Assembly in 1982. In 1988–89, he became leader of a power struggle for control of the Assembly. The “Gang of Five”, as they were called–Calderon, Gary Condit, Steve Peace of Chula Vista, Gerald Eaves of Rialto, and Rusty Areias of Los Banos, California–were conservative Democrats who tried to wrest power from Willie Brown, then Speaker of the Assembly. Calderon was nominated for the office of Speaker, but Brown prevailed by a vote of 40-34. Brown stripped all five of committee leadership positions and staff.
In 1990, Calderon left the Assembly, and he was elected to the California State Senate. From September 1996 until the end of his term, Calderon served as the first Hispanic Senate Majority leader in California history. He ran unsuccessfully for Attorney General in 1998, losing the primary to Bill Lockyer. Prior to his 2006 election to the Assembly, he served as California Health Care Commissioner and was a Partner with the law firm of Nossaman.
Calderon served a total of 20 years in the California legislature. He is also the first person to have served as Majority Leader in both the California Assembly and California Senate.
Prior to his 1982 election to the Assembly, Calderon was a prosecutor and also served on the Montebello School Board.
Calderon graduated from California State University, Los Angeles and earned a law degree from the UC Davis School of Law.
His brothers Ronald S. Calderon and Thomas M. Calderon have both served in the State Assembly. Ronald currently holds Charles’ former Senate seat; Thomas has been out of the legislature since an unsuccessful run for Insurance Commissioner in 2002.
Calderon has a wife named Lisa, and they have three children. Calderon’s son Ian serves in the state assembly, representing the 57th district.

Clients of the Firm include multi-national corporations, public agencies, private businesses, trade associations, non-profits, and individuals. E. George Joseph serves as Nossaman’s managing partner.
The Firm was founded in 1942 in Los Angeles by Walter L. Nossaman. As a result of several mergers and acquisitions, the Firm’s name has morphed throughout the years. Our Litigation Department celebrated a significant win with our client, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporate (FDIC), in Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, as the Receiver for IndyMac Bank, F.S.B. v. Scott Van Dellen et al. where the FDIC was awarded a $169 million verdict. This was the first lawsuit filed against former bank officers by the FDIC arising out of the recent financial crisis and was also the first such suit to go to trial. This verdict was #13 on the National Law Journal’s list of the “Top 100 Verdicts of the Year” for 2012, and was profiled by the Daily Journal as the Top Plaintiffs’ Verdict by Impact for 2012 and named the second largest Plaintiffs’ Verdict by Dollar for 2012 (the only case to earn a place on both Daily Journal lists).
Also celebrating many recent milestones, Nossaman’s Infrastructure Practice Group, named one of the Top Project Finance Practice Groups of 2012 by Law360, served as the lead outside legal advisor to the California Department of Transportation (“Caltrans”) on the $1.1 billion Presidio Parkway Project, the first transportation project in California to be delivered under the state’s recently enacted public-private partnership (P3) statute. The project was recognized as the “Americas P3 Deal of the Year” by Project Finance International. Our Infrastructure group also advised the Virginia Department of Transportation on the procurement and negotiation of a $2.1 billion toll concession P3 to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain the Downtown Tunnel/Midtown Tunnel/MLK Freeway. The project was the first United States transportation P3 to reach financial close in 2012 and is the largest transportation project undertaken in the region in almost 30 years.
Additionally, members of Nossaman’s Healthcare and Corporate Practice Groups successfully represented HealthCare Partners, the country’s largest operator of medical groups and physician networks, in their merger agreement with DaVita Inc., a leading provider of kidney care services for those diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. The $4.42 billion merger was the fifth largest M&A deal in California in 2012.

Terrence P. “Terry” Melcher (February 8, 1942 – November 19, 2004) was an American musician and record producer, who was instrumental in shaping the sound of American West Coast rock music. His greatest contribution to the culture of the time was producing The Byrds‘ innovative cover hits “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Turn! Turn! Turn!“, and his work with The Beach Boys. He was the only child of actress/singer Doris Day.
In 1968, Beach Boy Dennis Wilson introduced Melcher to ex-con and aspiring musician Charles Manson. Manson and his ‘family’ had been living in Wilson’s house on Sunset Boulevard after Wilson had picked up Patricia Krenwinkel and Ella Jo Bailey from the family hitchhiking. Wilson expressed interest in Manson’s music and even recorded two of Manson’s songs with The Beach Boys. For a time, Melcher was interested in recording Manson’s music, as well as making a movie about the ‘family’ and their ‘hippie commune’ existence. Manson met Melcher at 10050 Cielo Drive, the home Melcher shared with his girlfriend, actress Candice Bergen, and with musician Mark Lindsay. Manson eventually auditioned for Melcher, but Melcher declined to sign him. There was still talk of a documentary being made about Manson’s music, but Melcher abandoned the project after witnessing his subject become embroiled in a fight with a drunken stuntman at Spahn Ranch. Both Wilson and Melcher severed their ties with Manson, a move that angered Manson.
Not long after severing ties with Manson, Melcher and Bergen moved out of the Cielo Drive home. The house’s owner, Rudi Altobelli, then leased it to film director Roman Polanski and his wife, actress Sharon Tate. Manson visited the house asking for Melcher, but was turned away as Melcher had moved. On August 9, 1969, the house was the site of the murders of Sharon Tate (who was eight months pregnant at the time), coffee heiress Abigail Folger (known as Gibby to her friends), hairdresser Jay Sebring, writer Wojciech Frykowski, and Steven Parent, by members of Manson’s ‘family’. Some authors and law enforcement personnel have theorized that 10050 Cielo Drive was targeted by Manson as revenge for Melcher’s rejection, and that Manson was unaware that he and Bergen had moved out. However, Family member Tex Watson has stated that Manson and company did in fact know that Melcher was no longer living there, and Terry’s former roommate, Mark Lindsay, stated: “Everybody speculated that Manson sent his minions up there to get rid of Terry because he was angry about not getting a record deal. But Terry and I talked about it later and Terry said Manson knew (Melcher had moved) because Manson or someone from his organization left a note on Terry’s porch in Malibu.”.
At that time, Melcher was producing singer Jimmy Boyd for A&M Records. After initial tracks were recorded, the Manson murders took place, prompting Melcher to go into seclusion, and the session was never completed. When Manson was arrested, it was widely reported that he had sent his followers to the house to kill Melcher and Bergen. Manson family member Susan Atkins, who admitted her part in the murders, stated to police and before a grand jury that the house was chosen as the scene for the murders “to instill fear into Terry Melcher because Terry had given us his word on a few things and never came through with them”. In this aim, the Manson Family was successful. Melcher took to employing a bodyguard and told Manson prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi that his fear was so great, he had been undergoing psychiatric treatment. Melcher was the most frightened of the witnesses at the trial, even though Bugliosi assured him that “Manson knew you were no longer living (on Cielo Drive)”.

When John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Michelle Phillips and Cass Elliot first recorded “California Dreaming”, they laid down backing vocals only, behind the voice of Barry McGuire (Eve Of Destruction). Later, McGuires’s track was removed and the group added their lead vocals so the song could be used as a filler for their first Mamas and Papas album. When the song was released as a single, it was so popular, it sold 150,000 copies the first day and in May 1966, went to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100.
John Phillips was the main person behind the first music festival called Monterey Pop Festival and original the Beach Boys were suppose to headline the show but pulled out so they could attempt to finish the album SMILE.

PHILLIPS, FRANK FAUCETT (1873-1950)
President and cofounder of Phillips Petroleum Company, Frank Phillips was born on November 28, 1873, in Scotia, Nebraska. He was the eldest son of ten children in the family of Lewis Franklin and Lucinda Josephine Faucett Phillips. Because of a grasshopper infestation, the Phillipses moved to Iowa in 1874 and settled on a farm near Conway. As a boy Phillips experienced the toil, poverty, and frustrations of rural life. While on the farm he earned his first wages by digging potatoes for ten cents a day.
After admiring the dapper dress of a barber who wore “striped pants,” at age fourteen Phillips left the farm and schoolroom to apprentice in a barbershop in nearby Creston, Iowa. After learning the trade, he ventured west to barber a year in Colorado and Utah Territory boomtowns. By the time he was twenty-four, Phillips had returned to Creston and purchased two barbershops. He concocted a tonic of perfumes and rainwater, labeled it Mountain Sage, and peddled it in his shops as a baldness cure. The remedy was worthless but was his first effort at manufacturing and merchandising products to the public.
Barbering gave Phillips an opportunity to meet Creston’s influential leaders. One of his customers was banker John Gibson. Not only did Phillips develop an association with Gibson, he also grew fond of Gibson’s daughter, Jane. In 1897 Frank and Jane married. From that union came their only offspring, John Gibson Phillips, who was born on December 9, 1898. Frank and Jane later took in two young orphaned sisters, renamed them Mary Francis and Sara Jane Phillips, and reared them as their own.
