The Haunted Junk Yard (Open Thread)

It happens every year in Smithfield. The complaints continue every October. Different people, different dates but always October.

Paul and Dora were running late. It was October 6th and their part was ready to pick up across town at an old salvage yard. After hours of getting lost, darkness had fallen. Dora was snippy, tired and hungry. Paul just wanted to get home. The front gates were chained and padlocked and the area was pitch black when they put their car in park on the street.

Dora, loosing her temper hissed ” It’s too late, they are closed” Paul, staying cool remarks that he sees someone inside. They step out of the car into the cold, night air to the gated fence. The gate slowly creaks, and moves open just a few feet. Paul, slides thru the gate and Dora gets back into the car, but without keys. She pulls up her coat collar and pouts in the front seat.

Paul sees a man on a tractor or something, moving cars around on the other side of a dark office shed. He speaks to the man and asks if he works the yard. The man replies no, but he is busy. The man tells Paul that his family is there in a car in the yard. Paul asks” which car ?” The man says it is a  black Daytona. Paul introduces himself and the man does so as well.” Nice to meet you Paul” he says. “My name is Earnest Sands. My family died in that Daytona 14 years ago and they are here. I see them each October but that car is hard to find. It gets piled on every year”. Earnest then tells Paul that there are many folks around that yard every October, as their families are around then too. In the cars that they died in…

Paul, a bit spooked and tired heads back thru the gate to Dora and their car. He tells Dora about his conversation with Earnest and informs Dora that the man must be insane. Dora, with wide eyes turns to Paul. She speaks slowly and clearly and replies ” Then that teenage boy over there must be crazy too…He came to the car asking where his mom and dad were. He said they were killed in a Ford pick up and were in it in the salvage yard. He is right there Paul”

They both gaze over, to the right of the front path to the gate, and there he was. A young boy, thin, in sneakers, army jacket, hands in pockets and  dark, stained jeans. At that moment headlights appeared in the street behind their car. As the headlights brightened the area where the boy had been they went right thru his image, and  then he was gone……
