Back to Baker etc…:

Baker Botts L.L.P. is a major United States-based international law firm of around 800 attorneys, with a long, prominent history, significant political connections, boasting more than half of the Fortune 100 companies among its clients. Headquartered in One Shell Plaza in Downtown Houston, Texas, the firm has a major list of energy related clients. It is said to be the second-oldest law firm west of the Mississippi with Rose Law Firm of Little Rock, Arkansas (founded November 1, 1820) and Lathrop & Gage LLP of Kansas City Missouri (founded 1873, both laying claim to the title of oldest.

The firm traces its history to 1840 in the Republic of Texas, with the beginning of legal practice by founding partner Peter W. Gray. Gray represented the Allen Brothers, founders of the city of Houston. Confederate Colonel Walter Browne Botts (from Fredericksburg, Virginia) joined the firm in 1865, and it became Gray and Botts. In 1872, James Addison Baker (a.k.a. Judge Baker; 1821–1897; from Huntsville, Texas) joined the firm and the name was changed to Gray, Botts & Baker. Gray left the partnership in 1874, to join the Supreme Court of Texas, and the two remaining partners, Walter Browne Botts and James A. Baker, renamed the firm Baker & Botts. Peter Gray also died in 1874. Judge Baker’s son, also James Addison Baker (a.k.a. Captain Baker and James A. Baker, Sr.; 1857–1941) joined the firm as a clerk in 1877, a lawyer in 1881, and became partner in 1887, at which time the name became Baker, Botts and Baker.

In 1896, Captain Baker, personal attorney for Texas millionaire William Marsh Rice (Rice became a client of Peter Gray in the 1850s), drew up a new will for Rice and was the will’s executor. In 1900, Rice was poisoned in his bed by his valet, Charles F. Jones, and his New York City lawyer, Albert T. Patrick, a sensational crime that made national headlines. Captain Baker was a key witness and helped investigate the murder after Patrick produced a will that gave him control of the 5 million dollars in 1904. Baker got the will he drew up entered as evidence in the case, and it was subsequently proved that Patrick had forged Rice’s signature on the will he submitted. The case was not settled until 1910, and by that time the estate had grown to almost 10 million dollars. When the intent of Rice’s will was finally executed, it led to the establishment of the William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Literature, Art, and Science, which is now called Rice University. Captain Baker was the first chairman of the Rice Board of Trustees. Rice University has maintained ties to Baker Botts since that time.

Jules Henri Tallichet joined the firm in 1909, bringing with him Southern Pacific Railroad, his major client at Sam R. Fisher in Austin, Texas.

Captain Baker’s son, James Addison Baker, Jr. (1892–1973), also joined the firm in 1919 and his classmate and friend Henry Malcolm Lovett (son of the first president of Rice University, Edgar Odell Lovett) joined in 1924. Walter H. Walne served as managing parter from 1926 to 1933.

After leaving public service, former Chief of Staff in President Ronald Reagan‘s first administration and United States Secretary of State James Addison Baker, III (a.k.a. James Baker) joined the firm as a senior partner in 1993. He maintained two offices in Washington, being also affiliated as a partner at the Carlyle Group (with the title of senior counsel). Prior to government service, Mr. Baker had worked for the rival Houston law firm Andrews & Kurth to avoid suspicions of nepotism.

In 2000, the firm renamed itself Baker Botts.

 Notable partners and employees

Baker Hughes is the combination of many companies that have developed and introduced technology to serve the petroleum service industry. Their combined history dates back to the early 1900s. During its history, Baker Hughes has acquired and assimilated numerous oilfield pioneers including: Brown Oil Tools, CTC], EDECO, and Elder Oil Tools (completions); Milchem and Newpark (drilling fluids); EXLOG (mud logging); Eastman Christensen and Drilex (directional drilling and diamond drill bits); Teleco (measurement while drilling); Tri-State and Wilson (fishing tools and services); Aquaness, Chemlink and Petrolite (specialty chemicals), Western Atlas (seismic exploration, well logging), BJ Services Company (pressure pumping).

The Hughes Tool Company was founded by Walter Benona Sharp and Howard R. Hughes, Sr., father of Howard Hughes, Jr. In 1908, Howard Hughes, Sr. and his partner Walter Sharp, developed the first two-cone drill bit, designed to enable rotary drilling in harder, deeper formations than was possible with earlier fishtail bits. They conducted two secret tests on a drilling rig in Goose Creek, Texas. Each time, Hughes asked the drilling crew to leave the rig floor, pulled the bit from a locked wooden box, and then his associates ran the bit into the hole. The drill pipe twisted off on the first test, but the second was extremely successful. In 1909, the Sharp & Hughes bit was granted a U.S. patent. In the same year, the partners formed the Sharp-Hughes Tool Company in Houston…..

W.E.B. and Shirley had friends in China, Africa etc..A very “global” couple:
This new story, includes the name Dean Rusk. This is too odd. Now that name Rusk goes to Helena Fathia Rusk/Ritz/Rizk. Like Rusk County, Texas too. Now Helena was married to Kwame, the President of Ghana, where Shirley Temple Black was in office as well. Well, Helena and Kwame happen to be the friends of W.E.B. Dubois and Shirley Graham DuBois. Dubois is French for wood *. Now Helena was related to Gamal Naser of Egypt and her brother married into a British family. The real twister is Mr. Dean Rusk and his associate….hum..

Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Mathew Knowles, a medical-equipment salesman, and Tina Knowles (née Beyincé). Mathew is African American. Tina, a Louisiana Creole, has African, French, Native American, and Irish ancestry; is a descendant of Acadian leader Joseph Broussard. Beyoncé was baptized with her mother’s maiden name as her first name. She is the elder sister of Solange Knowles, also a singer, songwriter and actress.

And wiki on her dad:

Before Knowles became a star maker in the music business, he had distinguished himself by a career in sales of office and medical equipment. Knowles moved to Houston in 1976 and began working for the Xerox Corporation, with whom he enjoyed a successful ten-year tenure, primarily as part of an specialist unit in the medical systems sales division. Knowles was the number-one medical systems sales rep for three of the four years he worked in that division. When Xerox closed its medical systems division Knowles was working as a CT/MRI sales specialist, selling diagnostic imaging equipment to hospitals and health facilities—and for two other major medical equipment companies, as well. He also worked in the area of neurosurgical sales, representing a wide range of devices and solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders. In 1992 Knowles left his career in corporate and medical sales to devote full-time attention to his growing music company.

Back again to this post we return to Anna Duke and radical connections:

*aka Weir, Bailey, Danielle etc..Mother of two children, a daughter and a son.

Elizabeth Anna Duke (born November 25, 1940) is a former teacher and militant fugitive best known for her involvement with a number of political organizations, and subsequent flight from prosecution. She is currently wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Duke was born in Beeville, Texas on November 25, 1940 but has given her date of birth as April 20, 1941. Duke was allegedly a member of a Weathermen splinter group, the May 19th Communist Movement. The group claimed responsibility for a series of bombings of U.S. government buildings between 1983 and 1985, including the bombing of the United States Capitol building in November 1983.

Duke, along with her accomplice Alan Berkman, was arrested in May 1985 and indicted on conspiracy and weapons charges by a federal grand jury, in what became known as the Resistance Conspiracy case. Also charged as co-conspirators were Marilyn Jean Buck, wanted for her role in the 1981 Brinks armored car robbery, Laura Whitehorn, Linda Sue Evans, Susan Rosenberg, and Timothy Blunk. She was released on bail in July 1985 and in October 1985 she skipped bail and has evaded recapture ever since.

The Resistance Conspiracy case (1988-1990) was a Federal Judicial trial in the United States in which six people were charged with the 1983 U.S. Senate bombing and related bombings of Fort McNair and the Washington Navy Yard: Marilyn Jean Buck, Linda Sue Evans, Susan Rosenberg, Timothy Blunk, Alan Berkman, and Elizabeth Ann Duke.

After spending six months behind bars for contempt of court, defense attorney Linda Backiel will be released from jail on Monday, a federal judge has ruled.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Charles R. Weiner was hailed by Backiel’s attorney, Patricia V. Pierce, who said there will probably be a big celebration after Backiel walks out of Bucks County Prison at 9 a.m.

“Obviously, I’m ecstatic that she’s getting out,” Pierce said in a telephone interview. “She never should have been locked up in the first place.”

Indeed, the incarceration of Backiel – a former public defender in Philadelphia who most recently had been a defense lawyer in Puerto Rico – sparked national interest and debate about the issuance of grand-jury subpoenas to lawyers.

The case that led to Backiel’s incarceration last December for contempt of court involves Elizabeth Ann Duke, a self-described revolutionary who jumped bail in October 1985 while awaiting trial on charges of possessing explosives and illegal firearms.

Backiel, who was consulted for advice but never formally represented Duke, was the last person known to have had custody of a note – meant to be typed and given out to the media – in which Duke had described her intention to flee. Such a note could be used by a prosecutor to show intent to flee, an essential element of the crime of bail jumping.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald H. Levine argued that he was entitled to that document – or Backiel’s testimony about what happened to it – as evidence to present to the grand jury.

Yesterday, Levine said it was “unfortunate” that Backiel “has seen fit not to produce such evidence.”

Petra (Greek Πέτρα Petra, meaning “stone”; Arabic: البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ) is a historical and archaeological city in the Jordanian governorate of Ma’an, that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is a rose city. Petra stands in the southern area in Jordan.

Established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as its most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.

The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as “a rose-red city half as old as time” in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as “one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage”. See: UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. Petra was chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the “28 Places to See Before You Die.
