The Hounds And Watson’s Study Part 1 (The Files)

The bankers lamp gave off a green glow from the heavy, old desk. The desk sat in front of 6 tall, wide windows that overlooked the carriages and sidewalk traffic at the front of his estate. The windows all had tied back, burgundy drapes of thick velvet that added in with the musty smell of stacks of papers and gave the room a very old scent. It smelled of the past, and of the future too.

We waited until we heard the front door close gently as he left early one morning to meet his employer Mr Holmes. Patiently we waited 10 minutes before sneaking in. We couldn’t wait to go through his files, to see what they contained and all of his secrets. He was quite famous after all. The files were piled all around in stacks, along with tons of old notes and ledgers with his name engraved on the fronts:

Accurate enough that I was awarded my own star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars. And I smell something rotten in Denmark. Obama has a big skeleton in his closet. It’s his college records. Call it “gut instinct” but my gut is almost always right. Obama has a secret hidden at Columbia- and it’s a bad one that threatens to bring down his presidency. Gut instinct is how I’ve made my living for 29 years since graduating Columbia.

Watson is the only woman to serve as the Executive Director of the Detroit NAACP. She was appointed as vice chair of the Detroit Human Rights Commission by Mayor Coleman Young and chaired Women’s Equality Day Celebrations in the City of Detroit for a decade. Formerly, she was a local and national YWCA executive. Prior to her election, Council Member Watson was Public Policy Liaison for Congressman John Conyers, and was a co-founder of the Coalition for Health Care Equity.

Watson has hosted an award-winning radio/television talk show “Wake Up Detroit!” for nearly two decades, and has traveled throughout the Continent of Africa, the USSR, Caribbean and across the nation.

Council Member Watson earned a Journalism Degree from the University of Michigan, where she was active with the peace and justice movement. Currently, she is a board member with: ACLU, NAACP, Vice-President of the Detroit Wayne County Health Authority, Every Church a Peace Church, and SEMCOG. Watson is the mother of four and has garnered more than 800 awards, including an Honorary Doctorate. She holds Lifetime Achievement Awards from the YWCA, the NAACP, the Detroit Human Rights Commission, the SCLC, and a National Award from the National Conference of Negro Women.

Watson is currently helping thousands of citizens avoid foreclosures and water shut-offs & chairs the Anti-Foreclosure Committee of a Tri-County Summit during 2008. Council Member Watson has also played a key role in combating scrap metal thieves by sponsoring 4 tough laws & working closely with law enforcers & lately, she has unexpectedly become the ‘go-to’ person for citizens suffering from home invasions and slow police response.

Council Member Watson led the way to fund 4,000 summer jobs in 2007 & 2008; she provided leadership to re-open the Dexter-Elmhurst Center & works with the Dr. Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, to sustain the African World Festival as the “signature” Ethnic Festival on Detroit’s Riverfront.

Mr. Knox – nicknamed Shorty because of his height – was born in Buffalo on Sept. 1, 1898, to one of the city’s leading families. In 1888 his father had opened the first of a chain of variety stores, S. H. Knox & Company. The chain grew rapidly, and in 1912 the elder Knox merged it with an enterprise run by a cousin, F. W. Woolworth. The new venture became the F. W. Woolworth chain of 5-and-10-cent stores.

The younger Knox attended Hotchkiss Preparatory School and graduated from Yale in 1920. His interest in the visual arts followed that of his parents, who were active in the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, and he joined the board in 1925. In 1939 he and his family donated money to establish a room of contemporary art at the gallery in memory of his mother, Grace Millard Knox, enabling the gallery to buy important works by Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Mondrian, Beckmann and Braque.

In the 1950’s, with the advice of Gordon M. Smith, then director of the Albright Gallery, he began buying for the gallery the works, then still modestly priced, of the Abstract Expressionist painters, including Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann and Robert Motherwell. The Albright was the first museum in the world to buy works by Clyfford Still and mounted two important Still shows.

Cosby left Temple to pursue a career in comedy, though he would return to collegiate studies in the 1970s. He lined up gigs at clubs in Philadelphia and soon was off to New York City, where he appeared at The Gaslight Cafe starting in 1962. He lined up dates in Chicago, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. He received national exposure on NBC‘s The Tonight Show in the summer of 1963 which led to a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records, who released his debut LP Bill Cosby Is a Very Funny Fellow…Right!, the first of a series of popular comedy albums, in 1964.

3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungry_i

How the club’s name came about is something of a mystery. According to one story, the lower-case “i” was meant to represent “intellectual.” Banducci swore that it was literally Freudian and was short for “the hungry id.” In another story, the sign was not finished in time for the club’s opening, and next-day reviews in the San Francisco papers cemented the name for all time. In another story, artist Mark Adams came up with the name. “It (the lowercase ‘i’) designated the first-person singular, with all of its various cravings,” he explained in a 1985 interview quoted in a 2006 obituary for him.

Originally located at 599 Jackson Street on the ground floor of the International Hotel, the hungry i and Banducci were also instrumental in the careers of actor/comic Ronnie Schell, comic Bill Cosby, comic Lenny Bruce and minister Malcolm Boyd. Musically, The Kingston Trio recorded two famous albums at the hungry i, including the first live performance of their version of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight“. Tom Lehrer‘s final satirical album That Was The Year That Was (1965) was also recorded there, as well as The Limeliters‘ album Our Men In San Francisco (1963).

Jazz legend Vince Guaraldi, folk singer Glenn Yarborough, the Gateway Singers, and comedians Godfrey Cambridge, Professor Irwin Corey, and Mort Sahl were also given career boosts from their appearances at the hungry i, as well as Dick Cavett and Woody Allen. The folk-rock group We Five were signed to A&M records after Herb Alpert saw them perform there.

John Phillips (of The Mamas & the Papas fame) and his The Journeymen were the house band in the early ’60s.

The young Barbra Streisand begged Banducci for a single night at his nightclub, insisting that she would soon be a huge star. Banducci agreed to sign the singer, who had never performed professionally but was eventually starring in I Can Get It for You Wholesale on Broadway. The resulting concerts (March-April 1963) were well-attended, giving Streisand nationwide acclaim.

When the comedy and folk music scene wilted in the mid-1960s with the rise of hard rock and Vietnam war protests, Banducci closed the club and sold its name to a topless club at another location nearby at 546 Broadway, where the name doubtless still draws in unwary tourists interested in history. Banducci and many of the club’s performers reunited in 1981 for a memorable one-night performance, captured in the nationally televised documentary hungry i Reunion, produced and directed by Thomas A. Cohen and featuring separate reminiscences by Maya Angelou and Bill Cosby.

NOTE*

The hungry i was originally a nightclub in North Beach, San Francisco. It was launched by Eric “Big Daddy” Nord, who sold it to Enrico Banducci in 1950.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrico_Banducci

Enrico Banducci (February 17, 1922 – October 9, 2007), born Harry Banducci, was an American impresario. Banducci operated the hungry i nightclub in San Francisco‘s North Beach neighborhood, where he launched the careers of Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Bill Cosby, Jonathan Winters, and Barbra Streisand, and featured Woody Allen and Dick Cavett before they were well-known, as well as countless folk singers. The hungry i featured the original brick wall in the stage background, a staple for stand up comedy presentations ever since. Banducci bought the hungry i from its founder, Eric “Big Daddy” Nord, in 1950. Banducci later also started the Clown Alley hamburger stand as well as Enrico’s Sidewalk Cafe on Broadway, a restaurant and jazz club that has been in and out of business (as of 2007 it remains in operation under new ownership).

Banducci was born in 1922 in Bakersfield, California. He came to San Francisco at age 13 to study under the concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony. He changed his first name to “Enrico” after Enrico Caruso. He was married five times, the first to Raimonde Verney, daughter of a symphony violinist. He wore a beret, beginning after a health inspector insisted he wear a hair covering while he was running a food operation and continuing to cover his eventual baldness. He bought the hungry i for $800 in borrowed money in 1948. Although he once calculated that he made over $10 million from his various projects, he spent it all on his lavish lifestyle. He spent time in jail, and was involved in a number of brawls. The hungry i went bankrupt at least once.

In 1981, Mort Sahl, Jonathan Winters, Irwin Corey, Jackie Vernon and a host of others gathered to film a tribute to Banducci that was nationally televised and called The hungry i Reunion. The film is intercut with reminiscences by Bill Cosby, Maya Angelou (who started at Banducci’s club performing Caribbean songs and patter with a Caribbean accent) and Phyllis Diller.

In 1988, after he lost Enrico’s to one of its several closures over the years, he became a hot dog vendor in Richmond, Virginia, at the “hungry i hot dog stand,” located on very expensive property in the city’s most upscale restaurant district that he’d purchased for his son years earlier; he moved back to San Francisco in the late 1990s.

4. Previous owner of the club:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_%22Big_Daddy%22_Nord

5. Big daddy connects here:

In 1950, Nord rented a basement in North beach where he and a growing number of young people, aspiring beatniks, hung out. He called the place the “hungry i” nightclub. A few years later, Enrico Banducci took over club and it became the cradle of stand-up comedy.

In June 1958, on orders from San Francisco mayor George Christopher to crack down on drug use and delinquency in North Beach, San Francisco police raided Nord’s Party Pad club and arrested him for operating a public dance without a license. Later that summer, on August 8, in an article titled “Schoolgirl Lost in Beatnik Land”, San Francisco Chronicle readers learned that two high school girls in Eric “Big Daddy” Nord’s production of Archy and mehitabel had disappeared after the previous night’s performance. Chronicle readers learned how Nord and another man had taken the girls on a car trip. Nord, driving his Oldsmobile at the end of a beatnik procession, saying his interest in the girls was only fatherly, turned himself in at the Hall of Justice. His much-publicized trial ended in December, when he was fined $300 and given three years’ probation. Said the presiding judge, “You and your friends in Beatnikland emphasize your unusual ways to give an impression that you have talent, ability and stature, when actually a person looking into you finds no talent at all.” Later, the same judge overturned his own verdict.

After his 1958 trial, Nord declared bankruptcy, moved to Venice in Southern California, and, putting his entrepreneurial ability to good use, started The Gas House, a café that soon became popular with Los Angeles beatniks and poets, who read their work alongside Nord. The Gas House was used as the setting for a cult horror film called The Hypnotic Eye (1960) that featured Nord as a bongo-playing beatnik. The role helped to launch Nord’s brief film career.

In the mid-1960s, Nord returned to Northern California, where, in Scotts Valley, he converted a barn into a psychedelic night club that catered to hippies and was the scene of some of Ken Kesey‘s happenings. In the early 1970s, he operated a “cultural center” in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury neighborhood. In 1972 Nord appeared as the character ‘God’ in a San Francisco underground photo-comic titled ‘SuperJesus’ now rated an underground comix classic. He moved to Los Gatos in 1975 and remained there until his death in 1989.

6. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Kesey

Kenneth EltonKenKesey (pron.: /ˈkz/; September 17, 1935 – November 10, 2001) was an American author, best known for his novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1962) and as a counter-cultural figure who considered himself a link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the hippies of the 1960s. “I was too young to be a beatnik, and too old to be a hippie,” Kesey said in a 1999 interview with Robert K. Elder.

After a brief sojourn in Los Angeles, he was awarded a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship in 1958; because he lacked the prerequisites to work toward a master’s degree in English, he elected to enroll in the creative writing program at Stanford University that fall, where he would develop lifelong friendships with fellow writers Ken Babbs, Larry McMurtry, Wendell Berry, Ed McClanahan, Gurney Norman, and Robert Stone. While at Stanford, Kesey resided on Perry Lane (a historically bohemian enclave adjacent to the university golf course) and clashed with program director Wallace Stegner; according to Stone, Stegner “saw Kesey… as a threat to civilization and intellectualism and sobriety” and rejected Kesey’s Stegner Fellowship applications for the 1959-60 and 1960-61 terms. Nevertheless, Kesey received the $2,000 Saxton Prize from Harper for his first novel in progress (the oft-rejected Zoo) and continued to audit the graduate writing seminar through 1960 (taught that year by Frank O’Connor and the more congenial Malcolm Cowley) on a fellowship granted by Leslie Fiedler as he began the manuscript that would become One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

At the instigation of Perry Lane neighbor and Stanford psychology graduate student Vik Lovell (heretofore acquainted with Richard Alpert and Allen Ginsberg), Kesey volunteered to take part in a CIA-financed study under the aegis of Project MKULTRA at the Menlo Park Veterans Hospital, where he worked as a night aide. The project studied the effects of psychoactive drugs, particularly LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, cocaine, AMT, and DMT on people. Kesey wrote many detailed accounts of his experiences with these drugs, both during the study and in the years of private experimentation that followed. Kesey’s role as a medical guinea pig, as well as his stint working at the state veterans’ hospital (where he had access to the cabinet where they kept LSD), inspired him to write One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The success of this book, as well as the demolition of the Perry Lane cabins in August 1963, allowed him to move to a log house at 7940 La Honda Road in La Honda, California, an hour south of San Francisco. He frequently entertained friends and many others with parties he called “Acid Tests“, involving music (such as Kesey’s favorite band, The Warlocks, later known as the Grateful Dead), black lights, fluorescent paint, strobes and other “psychedelic” effects, and, of course, LSD. These parties were noted in some of Ginsberg’s poems and are also described in Tom Wolfe‘s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, as well as Hell’s Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs by Hunter S. Thompson and Freewheelin Frank, Secretary of the Hell’s Angels by Frank Reynolds.

There’s trouble in paradise for Jets owner Woody Johnson’s wealthy ex-wife Sale Johnson and her new husband, former NFL star and sportscaster Ahmad Rashad.

Socialite and former model Sale, who married Johnson & Johnson billionaire Woody in 1977 and had three children before they divorced in 2001, married NBC sportscaster Rashad, 63, in 2007. After the tragic death of her daughter Casey in 2010, they adopted Casey’s daughter, Ava.

Sources exclusively tell Page Six the couple, who live in a swanky private enclave in Jupiter, Fla., have recently been on the rocks — fighting over her immense $100 million wealth and his friendship with golf bad boy Tiger Woods, as well as his longtime pal NBA all-time great Michael Jordan.

A source told us, “Sale has asked him to move out. Things appear to be very bitter. He is trying to get her banned from his country club in Florida. And she worries about the influence of known adulterers Woods and Jordan.

“He plays golf with Tiger Woods. He’s also close friends with Michael Jordan, who was living with them for over a year.”

Sale, 63, received a $100 million divorce settlement in her split with Woody, and spends the winter in Florida. She and Rashad also have a $10 million apartment at 817 Fifth Ave.

Another source told us, “Sale has a watertight prenup with Ahmad, so if they divorce, he won’t be walking away with tens of millions.” The source added that former Vikings wide receiver and Emmy Award-winning sportscaster Rashad, while he serves as a studio host for NBA TV Atlanta, “spends a lot of time with Jordan and his buddies, golfing.”

Rashāad, once said to be worth $8 million, has been married four times and has five children. In 1985, he married “Cosby Show” star Phylicia Ayers-Allen [Phylicia Rashad] after proposing to her on live TV. They divorced after 16 years of marriage, in 2001.

Rashad’s agent, Tony Burton, declined to comment last night. Sale didn’t respond to e-mails and phone calls.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibnu_Sutowo

Ibnu Muhari (23 September 1914 Yogyakarta – 12 January 2001 Jakarta) was an Indonesian army officer, Cabinet Minister and former head of the Indonesian oil and gas producer Pertamina.

Ibnu was born near the Yogyakarta Sultan’s palace on 23 September 1914. His father had been a regency head near the city of Semarang in Central Java. His privileged background at the time of the colonial Dutch East Indies allowed him to attend a superior Dutch school and then medical school in Surabaya. Upon graduation, Ibnu was assigned to a colony of Javanese transmigrants in Belitung in South Sumatra. During the Japanese occupation in World War II, Ibnu, like many indigenous Indonesians filling in for imprisoned Europeans, assumed many local administrative powers. By the time of Japan’s surrender, he was a leader in irregular forces backing the Indonesian Republic in its fight for independence.

In 1945, Ibnu was appointed a combined staff and medical officer of the republican army fighting the Dutch for the Palembang regions oil fields and plantations, and once Indonesia’s independence was secured in 1949, he worked in the region’s civilian health service whilst remaining in active army duty. He was appointed head of the South Sumatra’s Sriwijaya Division in 1955, a division which earned much revenue for the army during the independence struggle by smuggling vast quantities of rubber, tea, pepper and coffee to Singapore. Although the independence struggle was over by late 1949, the lucrative trade continued, and Ibnu benefited through his wife, Zaleha, the daughter of a wealthy family who later succeeded in business in her own right. Army commander, General Nasution, recognised Ibnu’s administrative skills and appointed him in 1956 as Chief of Logistics and subsequently added the position of chief of Operations. He returned to Palembang to talk his former troops out of joining the anti-Sukarno rebellions in Sumatra and Sulawesi. Ibnu’s military prospects were thwarted by the 1958 Tanjung Priok smuggling scandal in which he was the main actor.

In 1957, Dutch assets in petroleum were nationalised and Permina founded. General Nasution installed Sutowo as Permina’s head. He served as Minister of Mines, Oil, and Natural Gas in President Suharto‘s “New Order” emergency cabinets of 1966. Sutowo’s younger brother had been Communist mayor of Surabaya, however, the New Order’s promotion of Sutowo despite his Communist connections were exceptions in this period of Communist purges.

Using the proceeds from the 1970s oil price rises, he expanded the state run oil monopoly’s interests far beyond oil production to include investments in oil tankers, steel and construction. Bruce Rappaport, an oil tanker broker, was accused of price gouging, and corruption, in a World Bank investigation of Ibnu and Pertamina. In 1976, Pertamina had built up debts of US$10.5 billion equivalent to 30% of Indonesia’s gross domestic product at the time) and was unable to service them. Ibnu was “dismissed with honour”, and in 1978 the attorney general announced he had been found “not involved” in criminal activity. He continued to manage thirty seven private companies.

Pertamina

In 1974 Sutowo flew to Gothenberg Sweden where he christened the new oil supertanker IBNU alongside close friend Itzac Rappaport. He then golfed with Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead and Gary Player.

On December 3, 1997 Bruce Rappaport was appointed as Antigua and Barbuda‘s ambassador to the country of Russia.

In a US Embassy cable released by Wikileaks entitled, “Antigua Govt Holds Trump Card Over Corrupt Opposition Leaders”. Bruce Rappaport, and others, are mentioned as being involved with corruption related to a desalinization plant to be built in Antigua. The cable states,

(c) The list of malefactors in the case is a veritable who’s who from the Lester Bird government – Bird himself, senior party MP Asot Michael, former Antiguan High Commissioner to the UK Ronald Sanders, Finance Minister John St. Luce, Treasury chief Keith Hurst, Public Utilities Minister Robin Yearwood, and Antiguan Ambassador to Russia and Israel Bruce Rappaport, along with some minor officials and ancillary characters. The firm’s findings are still preliminary pending interviews with both the original lender (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) Japan) and some of the accused, but the documentary and interview evidence obtained so far – including from a raid on Asot Michael’s personal files – appears to be compelling for at least several of the key players.

In 2006, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda (GOAB), sued many former government officials and Bruce Rappaport. The suit alleged that Bruce Rappaport embezzled $14 million via his role in re-negotiating the desalinization plant.

In February 2009, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda announced a settlement agreement. Bruce Rappaport agreed to repay $12 million of the embezzled funds.

In 1982, Rappaport filed the required paperwork to declare his 7.5% ownership of Bank of New York.

On August 19, 1999, the Bank of New York (BoNY) admitted to co-operating with an investigation into a $10 billion money-laundering operation. Bruce Rappaport was a focus of the investigation and also his other bank, Bank of New York-InterMaritime, a Swiss bank that conducted a large amount of Russian business. In addition to Bruce Rappaport, another Bank of New York (BoNY) employee, Natasha Kagalovsky, who is married to Konstantin Kagalovsky, was a focus of investigations.

In 1999, a shareholder lawsuit was filed against the Bank of New York. In the complaint the accusations against Rappaport, and Bank of New York, included money laundering, accusations of Russian organized crime involvement, and described Rappaport as “an international financier of questionable background”.

Bank of Credit and Commerce International

In 1987, Independent Counsel Robert McKay investigated Bruce Rappaport for activities he engaged in on behalf of CIA director William Casey. These activities included the purchasing of an Antiguan melon-farm for Israeli arms dealers who were significant customers of BCCI in Miami and placing Alfred Hartmann (BCCI employee) on the board of directors of Intermaritime Bank of Geneva and New York.

Rappaport was also the person who allegedly controlled bank accounts which received $10 million for the Contras. Swiss authorities told the Iran/Contra Committees that the $10 million had disappeared, and was found to have “mistakenly” gone to a Swiss businessman, who then returned the money after the Iran/Contra affair was discovered. Press accounts contended that the businessman was Rappaport.

During the early 1970s, General Ibnu Sutowo, signed numerous oil-tanker charter deals with Bruce Rappaport to provide oil transport for Pertamina.

In April 1977, General Ibnu Sutowo was placed under house arrest for his dealings with Rappaport. Rappaport was accused of price gouging and bringing Pertamina, and Indonesia, to bankruptcy.

During the 1980’s, James McKay, an independent prosecutor, was appointed to investigate alleged financial improprieties by Edwin Meese while he was attorney general. As part of this investigation, McKay looked into Meese’s involvement in a Bechtel pipeline deal in the Middle East. The pipeline was to extend from Iraq to Jordan and was negotiated by Edwin Meese, Shimon Perez, Bruce Rappaport, Robert C. McFarlane, and others.

From The Santos Republic:

Aburizal Bakrie (born 15 November 1946) is a politician, and widely recognized as one of the most successful pribumi (native Indonesian) businessmen in Indonesia. From 2004 until 2009 he served as Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare. Since 2009, Bakrie serves as the Chairman of the Golkar Party and since June 2012 as his party’s official candidate for Indonesia’s 2014 Presidential election

The Bakrie family: an Indonesian business dynasty mired in controversy

To many, Nat Rothschild’s partners in his mining venture will forever be linked with Indonesia’s mud volcano disaster of 2006.

The scandal engulfing Nat Rothschild’s Indonesian mining venture, Bumi, has raised questions about the involvement of his local partners, the politically influential Bakrie family, whose leading light is expected to run for the country’s presidency in two years’ time.

Behind the Bakrie Group is a family dynasty that currently has three key players, the brothers Aburizal, Nirwan and Indra. The group has fingers in lots of different pies, from media outlets and life insurance to mining, agriculture, construction, trade, and property development.

The brothers’ late father, Ahmad Bakrie, founded the Bakrie & Brothers holding company in 1942 as a modest trading enterprise, but it was to become a giant conglomerate that suffered a devastating reversal of fortune with the Asian financial crisis in 1997. At that time, according to the FT, the Bakrie Group had incurred debts worth $1.1b (£0.7bn)), with its creditors losing 80% of their money and the family retaining less than 3% of its starting shares.

The Bakries are often acknowledged with a shrug of wariness in Indonesia, not least because the family – whose members fly around the archipelago in private jets – is linked by many to the world’s largest mud volcano disaster in 2006. A gas exploration that went wrong in eastern Java resulted in the burial under sludge of thousands of people’s homes and businesses, and six years on the muck has only now slowed to one-tenth of its previous flow.

Indonesia’s national commission on human rights last month declared the disaster a human rights violation, and found that the Bakries’ drilling firm had paid insufficient compensation to those affected.

Abu Bakr “al Siddiq”

(ca. 570-634)

One of the first followers of Muhammad who, in 632, became the first of the four “rightly guided” caliphs. Abu Bakr repeatedly led the Muslim community in prayer in the lifetime of the Prophet. The latter used to call him by his patronyms of Abu Bakr and Ibn Abi Quhafa, and named him with the attributes “The Most Truthful” (al-Siddîq) and “Allah’s Freedman From the Fire” (`Atîq Allâh min al-nâr). The Prophet confirmed his high rank in many of his sayings, among them:

“Allah gave one of His servants a choice between this world and what He has with Him, and that servant chose what Allah has with Him.” Abu Bakr wept profusely and we wondered why he wept, since the Prophet had told of a servant that was given a choice. The Prophet himself was that servant, as Abu Bakr later told us. The Prophet continued: “Among those most dedicated to me in his companionship and property is Abu Bakr. If I were to take an intimate friend other than my Lord, I would take Abu Bakr. But what binds us is the brotherhood of Islam and its love. Let no door [of the Prophet’s mosque] remain open except Abu Bakr’s.”

Sohale Siddiqi (also Hal Siddiqi) was the best friend and roommate of Barack Obama while he attended Columbia University in the early 1980s. He is identified as “Sadik” in Obama’s memoir, Dreams From My Father. Obama describes Saddiqi as “a short, well-built Pakistani” who smoked marijuana and snorted cocaine. Siddiqi was from Karachi, Pakistan and came to America from London on a tourist visa. He overstayed his visa becoming an illegal alien.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toro_(company)

Founded as the Toro Motor Company in 1914 to build tractor engines for The Bull Tractor Company, Toro manufactures and sells turf and landscape maintenance equipment and precision irrigation systems for use by landscape contractors, golf course superintendents, sports fields and grounds managers, as well as individual consumers.

In 1986, Toro acquired the Wheel Horse Products Division of American Motors (AMC) Wheel Horse manufactured a wide range of lawn and garden tractors, as well as riding lawn mowers. The division was spun off from AMC so that the automaker could maintain focus on vehicles. Lawn and garden tractors were then marketed under the Toro, Wheel Horse, as well as the Toro Wheel Horse names. Acquisitions continued with the purchase of Lawn-Boy in 1989, James Hardie Irrigation in 1996, Exmark Manufacturing in 1997, Hayter Ltd. in 2005, Rain Master Irrigation Systems and Turf Guard Wireless Monitoring Technology in 2007, TyCrop Manufacturing Ltd. in 2009, and USPraxis, Inc. in 2010.

In the 1990s, then CEO Kendrick Melrose changed the company’s strategy, shifting its focus to “professional maintenance markets” (such as golf courses, sports fields, municipal parks, and commercial properties). The strategy yielded higher margins and offered more protection from the uncertainty of weather and economic conditions than the highly competitive residential market segments. In 2007, almost 70 percent of the company’s sales came from professional markets, versus one-third in 1990.

In 2007, the low-end lawn and garden tractor product manufacturing was outsourced to MTD Products, to be sold at Home Depot stores.

We’ve been here before, back in the third week of March 2008 to be precise. Recall the NEINblog entry “Barak Hussein Obama & his questionable connections” which was dreived directly from the news originally broken by Dr. Laurie Roth on her nationally syndicated radio program. Well, now the McCain/Palin campaign has finally been convinced that the long-term friendship between Obama and Khalidi is of the utmost importance to the American electorate five days before the election. A report in yesterday’s Jerusalem Post which has been updated today has the details. The McCain campaign call is for the Los Angeles Times to release a tape it has had for quite some time now. That tape was the basis of Peter Wallsten’s April 10, 2008 article entitled “Allies of Palestinians see a friend in Barack Obama.” A key sentence of Wallsten’s article stated:

“And yet the warm embrace Obama gave to Khalidi, and words like those at the professor’s going-away party, have left some Palestinian American leaders believing that Obama is more receptive to their viewpoint than he is willing to say.”

Oh really? What else besides Obama’s embrace of Rashid Khalidi would give the Palestinian’s such a notion, so strong a notion that the favor voting for him by a wide margin? Is barack Hussein Obama more receptive or supportive of the Palestian cause than he has made public to date? Hmmm. I wonder if this widespread Palestinian belief about Obama’s true inner worldview has anything to do with the fact that, by his own words, he purposefully, deliberately sought out such radical Palestinian leaders?

Make no mistake, when Palestinians talk about “ending the occupation” they are talking about the destruction of the State of Israel. Period. This should give all of us in the American Judeo-Christian tradition extreme pause before casting our ballot next Tuesday. Remember Barack Hussein obama is on record stating that his conversations with his friend, the PLO terrorist Khalid Rashidi, had “challenged his thinking.”

And number 8. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Ginsberg

In “Howl” and in his other poetry, Ginsberg drew inspiration from the epic, free verse style of the 19th-century American poet Walt Whitman, Both wrote passionately about the promise (and betrayal) of American democracy, the central importance of erotic experience, and the spiritual quest for the truth of everyday existence. J. D. McClatchy, editor of the Yale Review, called Ginsberg “the best-known American poet of his generation, as much a social force as a literary phenomenon.” McClatchy added that Ginsberg, like Whitman, “was a bard in the old manner – outsized, darkly prophetic, part exuberance, part prayer, part rant. His work is finally a history of our era’s psyche, with all its contradictory urges.

Ginsberg was a practicing Buddhist who studied Eastern religious disciplines extensively. He also lived modestly, buying his clothing in second-hand stores and residing in downscale apartments in New York’s East Village. One of his most influential teachers was the Tibetan Buddhist, the Venerable Chögyam Trungpa, founder of the Naropa Institute, now Naropa University at Boulder, Colorado. At Trungpa’s urging, Ginsberg and poet Anne Waldman started a poetry school there in 1974 which they called the “Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics” In spite of his attraction to Eastern religions, the journalist Jane Kramer argues that Ginsberg, like Whitman, adhered to an “American brand of mysticism” that was, in her words, “rooted in humanism and in a romantic and visionary ideal of harmony among men. Ginsberg’s political activism was consistent with his religious beliefs. He took part in decades of non-violent political protest against everything from the Vietnam War to the War on Drugs. His moving and angry poem September on Jessore Road, calling attention to the plight of Bangladeshi refugees, exemplifies what the literary critic Helen Vendler described as Ginsberg’s tireless persistence in protesting against “imperial politics, and persecution of the powerless.” His achievements as a writer as well as his notoriety as an activist gained him honors from established institutions. For example, his collection The Fall of America shared the annual U.S. National Book Award for Poetry in 1974.Other honors included the National Arts Club gold medal and his induction into the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, both in 1979. Ginsberg was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1995 for his book Cosmopolitan Greetings: Poems 1986–1992.

NOTE* Aldrich*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abby_Aldrich_Rockefeller

Abby Greene Aldrich Rockefeller (October 26, 1874 – April 5, 1948) was a prominent American socialite and philanthropist and the second-generation matriarch of the renowned Rockefeller family. Referred to as the “woman in the family”, she was especially noteworthy for being the driving force behind the establishment of the Museum of Modern Art, on 53rd Street in New York, in November 1929.

She was born Abigail “Abby” Greene Aldrich in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of the influential Senator Nelson Wilmarth Aldrich, chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, and the former Abby Pearce Truman Chapman, a distant descendant of the fourth signer of the Mayflower Compact.

Her sister, Lucy Aldrich, who was nearly completely deaf (at the time thought because of a childhood bout of scarlet fever, now believed to be the result of waardenburg syndrome, a genetic anomaly found in several generations of the Aldrich family), would be one of her closest friends throughout their lives, and is believed to have fostered Abby’s interest in American folk art.

Her early education came at the hands of Quaker governesses. In 1891, aged 18, she enrolled at the Miss Abbott’s School for Young Ladies in Providence, Rhode Island. While there she studied English composition and literature, French, German, art history and ancient history, gymnastics, and dancing. She graduated in 1893 and made her debut in November 1893. On June 30, 1894, she sailed for Liverpool, beginning a lifetime of extensive European and later Asian travel. The aesthetic education she gained from abroad, initially fostered by her father, helped to inform her future discernment as an art collector. This initial four-month sojourn included the countries of England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France.

In the fall of 1894 she met her future husband, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., the sole son and scion of the wealthy oil industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, at a friend’s house in Providence. They went through a protracted engagement, during which they were invited for a trip to Cuba in 1900, on President William McKinley‘s yacht. They finally married on October 9, 1901, in the major society wedding of the Gilded Age, in front of around a thousand of the elite personages of the time, at her father’s summer home in Warwick Neck, Kent County, Rhode Island.

After attending The Buckley School in New York, Rockefeller graduated from Harvard University cum laude in 1960, served for six months as a private in the U.S. Army, then went on an expedition for Harvard’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology which studied the Dani tribe of western Netherlands New Guinea. The expedition produced Dead Birds, an ethnographic documentary film produced by Robert Gardner, and for which Rockefeller was the sound recordist. Rockefeller and a friend briefly left the expedition to study the Asmat tribe of southern Netherlands New Guinea. After returning home with the Peabody expedition, Rockefeller returned to New Guinea to study the Asmat and collect Asmat art.

“It’s the desire to do something adventurous,” he explained, “at a time when frontiers, in the real sense of the word, are disappearing.”

Michael Rockefeller spent his time in Netherlands New Guinea actively engaged with the culture and the art while capturing ethnographic data. In one of his letters home, he wrote:

“I am having a thoroughly exhausting but most exciting time here…The Asmat is like a huge puzzle with the variations in ceremony and art style forming the pieces. My trips are enabling me to comprehend (if only in a superficial, rudimentary manner) the nature of this puzzle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dani_people

The Dani people, also spelled Ndani, and sometimes conflated with the Lani group to the west, are a people from the central highlands of western New Guinea (the Indonesian province of Papua).

They are one of the most populous tribes in the highlands, and are found spread out through the highlands. The Dani are one of the most well-known ethnic groups in Papua, due to the relatively numerous tourists who visit the Baliem Valley area where they predominate. “Ndani” is the name given to the Baliem Valley people by the Moni people, and, while they don’t call themselves Dani, they have been known as such since the 1926 Smithsonian Institution-Dutch Colonial Government expedition to New Guinea under Matthew Stirling who visited the Moni.

Elizabeth Mooney Kirk (February 23 1914 – June 29 2004) (known by many as Betty) spent her entire life advancing adult literacy. She worked with Frank Laubach using his “Each One Teach One” reading method. She traveled and taught in India, Africa and the United States. While working in Kenya, she provided the financial support for Barack Obama, Sr. to come to the United States to study.

Kirk co-authored many books with Dr. Frank Laubach and son Dr. Robert Laubach, which are still in use for teaching adults to read English. In this role, her work included running a mission boarding school in India and for two years she was head of a project for the British Government in Kenya training teachers and adults to read in some of the tribal languages.

Kirk often helped find sponsorships for promising Kenyan students to study in the United States. An article by Michael Dobbs in The Washington Post states that Kirk provided most of the financial support during Obama Sr’s early years in the United States, according to the Tom Mboya archives at Stanford University. Kirk is also mentioned in Barack Obama‘s 1995 book, Dreams from My Father (pg 427 hardcover) as writing college recommendation letters for Obama Sr.

Kirk’s grandfather was Addison Clark who, with his brother, founded the Addran Male and Female Academy which became Texas Christian University. She earned master’s degrees from George Washington University and Syracuse University. In 1960, she married Elmer LeValley Kirk. They lived for a time in West Africa before moving to California. Kirk taught school in the Oakland area for many years before retiring to central California.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Goldsmith

Born in Paris, Goldsmith was the son of luxury hotel tycoon and former Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Major Frank Goldsmith and his French wife Marcelle Moullier, and younger brother of environmental campaigner Edward Goldsmith. His father was Jewish and his mother Catholic; both Goldsmith and his brother were baptized in Catholicism: that was considered afterwards as a formality.

Goldsmith first attended Millfield and then later Eton, but dropped out in 1949 aged 16, after he had bet 10 pounds on a three-horse accumulator at Lewes, winning 8,000 pounds. With his winnings he decided that he should leave Eton immediately; in a speech at his boarding house he declared that, “a man of my  should not remain a schoolboy.”Later Goldsmith joined the army.

Goldsmith’s father Frank changed the family name from the German Goldschmidt to the English Goldsmith. The Goldschmidts, neighbors and rivals to the Rothschild family, were a wealthy, Frankfurt-based, Jewish family, who had been influential figures in international merchant banking since the 16th century. James’ great-grandfather was Benedict Hayum Salomon Goldschmidt, banker and consul to the Grand Duke of Tuscany. James’ grandfather Adolphe Benedict Goldschmidt (1838–1918), a multi-millionaire, came to London in 1895.

His first wife, whom he married when 20, was the Bolivian heiress Maria Isabel Patiño, 17-year-old daughter of tin magnate Antenor Patiño and the 3rd Duchess of Dúrcal. When Goldsmith proposed the marriage to Antenor Patiño, Patiño is alleged to have said, “We are not in the habit of marrying Jews“, to which Goldsmith is reported to have replied, “Well, I am not in the habit of marrying [Red] Indians.” This story, if true, is typical of Goldsmith’s humour. With the heiress pregnant and the Patiños insisting the pair separate, the couple eloped in January 1954. The marriage was brief. Rendered comatose by a cerebral hemorrhage in her seventh month of pregnancy, Maria Isabel Patiño y Goldsmith died in May 1954; her only child, Isabel, survived and was delivered by Caesarian section. She was brought up by Goldsmith’s family, and was married a few years to French sportsman Arnaud de Rosnay. On her father’s death, she inherited a large share of his estate. Isabel has since become a successful art-collector.

Goldsmith’s second wife was Ginette Lery, with whom he had a son, Manes, and daughter, Alix. In 1978, he married for the third time; his new wife was his mistress Lady Annabel Birley; the couple had three children, Jemima (born in 1974), Zacharias (born in 1975) and Benjamin (born in 1980). Zac and Jemima have both become much reported upon figures in the British media; in 2003 Ben married heiress Kate Emma Rothschild (born 1982), daughter of the late Amschel Rothschild and his wife Anita Guinness of the Guinness Brewery family. Speculation about Goldsmith’s romantic life was a popular topic in the British media: for example, in the press, there were a number of claims that James Goldsmith was the father of the family friend Lady Diana Spencer, due to his friendship with Diana’s mother, and later with Diana.

Hurley is godmother to Patsy Kensit and Liam Gallagher‘s son Lennon and two of David and Victoria Beckham‘s sons (Brooklyn and Romeo).

On 2 March 2007, Hurley and Nayar married at Sudeley Castle and then had a second traditional Hindu wedding at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. The Indian celebrations included a sangeet at Nagaur Fort and a reception at Mehrangarh Fort, wedding ceremonies, photos of which were sold to Hello! magazine for a reported £2 million, were attended by numerous celebrities, including Elton John, who gave Hurley away. Hurley, whose net worth was estimated at £13 million in 2003 resided on a 400-acre (1.6 km2) organic farm in Barnsley, Gloucestershire, with her son and husband.

On 12 December 2010, following press reports linking her romantically with Australian cricketer Shane Warne, Hurley announced that she and her husband Arun had separated several months earlier.Hurley filed for divorce on 2 April 2011, citing Nayar’s “unreasonable behaviour” as the cause: this is a conventional ground for divorce under English law. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McKinsey_%26_Company

McKinsey & Company, Inc. is a global management consulting firm that focuses on solving issues of concern to senior management. McKinsey serves as an adviser to many businesses, governments, and institutions.

McKinsey & Company was founded in 1926 in Chicago by James McKinsey under the name James O. McKinsey & Company. Previously, James McKinsey served as an accounting professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and is considered the father of managerial accounting. Advocates for the concepts introduced in McKinsey’s book, Budgetary Control, were among McKinsey’s first clients. The book founded the practice of managerial accounting.

Mr. McKinsey hired Tom Kearney and Marvin Bower in the early 1930s. In 1935.] In 1935, Marshall Field’s became a client and in 1935 convinced McKinsey to leave the firm to accept a temporary position and become its Chairman and CEO, in order to help the company through a restructuring. After McKinsey left, the remaining members of the firm agreed to merge with the accounting firm Scovell, Wellington & Company in 1935, leading to the creation of McKinsey, Wellington & Co.

In 1937 James O. McKinsey died unexpectedly of pneumonia, which led to the division of McKinsey, Wellington & Company in 1939. C. Oliver Wellington returned to manage Scovell, Wellington & Company full-time and took the accounting practice with him. The management engineering practice was split into two affiliated firms: McKinsey & Company and McKinsey, Kearney & Company, which later became known as A.T. Kearney. McKinsey & Company was led by Guy Crockett, Dick Fletcher, and Marvin Bower. Guy Crockett became Managing Partner of McKinsey & Company, running day-to-day operations, while Marvin Bower handled conceptual and long-term strategy as Crockett’s deputy. Bower would lead the company for 30 years with a focus on being “professional” in looks, tone, and conduct.

McKinsey & Company is credited with creating modern management consulting as a professional service. Marvin Bower is credited with shaping the firm’s values and principles. Bower’s idea was to create a management consulting firm working with senior executives with the same professional standards he had witnessed as a lawyer for the firm of Jones Day Reavis & Pogue, in Cleveland.

In New York, Bower established the firm’s core principles in a 1937 memo.

LOS ANGELES — A man who had an affair with Anna Nicole Smith in the last year of her life testified Tuesday that she became groggy when she took medications, some of which were given to her by a defendant in the drug conspiracy case.
G. Ben Thompson, a Myrtle Beach area developer, said he began a romantic relationship with the former Playboy model when she visited his Myrtle Beach home in summer 2005. He said she stayed in his room while Howard K. Stern, her lawyer and sometimes boyfriend, stayed in the guest room.
Thompson, 63, remembered seeing Stern bring Smith pills twice. After she swallowed them, her behavior changed, he said. “She would become all groggy and like in la-la land,” Thompson said. “She didn’t have all her faculties.” according to Myrtle Beach jail records. Stern, Dr. Khristine Eroshevich and Dr. Sandeep Kapoor have pleaded not guilty to conspiring to provide Smith with massive doses of opiates and sedatives. They are not accused of causing her 2007 overdose death.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_Rhodes

When he first came to Africa, Rhodes lived on money lent by his aunt Sophia. After a brief stay with the Surveyor-General of Natal, Dr. P.C. Sutherland, in Pietermaritzburg, Rhodes took an interest in agriculture. He joined his brother Herbert on his cotton farm in the Umkomazi valley in Natal. The land was unsuitable for cotton, and the venture failed.

In October 1871, 18-year-old Rhodes and his brother Herbert left the colony for the diamond fields of Kimberley. Financed by N M Rothschild & Sons, Rhodes succeeded over the next 17 years in buying up all the smaller diamond mining operations in the Kimberley area. His monopoly of the world’s diamond supply was sealed in 1889 through a strategic partnership with the London-based Diamond Syndicate. They agreed to control world supply to maintain high prices. Rhodes supervised the working of his brother’s claim and speculated on his behalf. Among his associates in the early days were John X. Merriman and Charles Rudd, who later became his partner in the De Beers Mining Company and the Niger Oil Company.

Francis Xavier Alexander Shields, Jr. (May 16, 1941 – April 27, 2003) was an American businessman and an executive at Revlon in New York, but is perhaps best known as the father of the actress Brooke Shields.

He was born in New York City, the eldest son of Francis Xavier Alexander Sr., a top-ranking American tennis player and of the Italian Princess Donna Marina Torlonia di Civitella-Cesi. Through his mother he is related to several Italian princely families (most notably Borgia, Medici, d’Este, di Savoia). His uncle, for example, was Don Alessandro Torlonia, 5th Prince di Civitella-Cesi, the husband of the Spanish Infanta Beatriz de Borbón y Battenberg, so that he and King Juan Carlos of Spain share cousins in the Torlonia-de Borbón family.

He attended the Buckley School in Manhattan and St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, where he captained the crew that rowed in the Henley Royal Regatta in 1962 and was a member of St. Anthony Hall. An avid sportsman, Shields never lost his love of rowing and founded the Power Ten New York, an organization dedicated to the sport, in 1980.

After starting his career on Wall Street, he moved to Palm Beach, Florida, in 1988, forming a real-estate company. An avid hunter and fisherman, the 6-foot-5 inch Shields spent much of his free time at the camp he owned in rural west Florida, Canoe Creek. In 1964, he married Maria Theresia Schmon (or Schmonn), better known as Brooke Shields’ mother/manager, Teri Shields. After their divorce, when Brooke was only five months old, he married, in 1970, Diana “Didi” Lippert, former wife of Thomas Gore Auchincloss, who is the son of Hugh D. Auchincloss and half-brother of Gore Vidal and a stepbrother of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He had three daughters by his second marriage: Marina, Olympia, and Christina.

He died in Palm Beach, Florida, of prostate cancer at the age of 61.

  1. Renee says:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Lloyd_Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright was born in the farming town of Richland Center, Wisconsin, United States, in 1867 and named Frank Lincoln Wright. His father, William Carey Wright (1825–1904), was a locally admired orator, music teacher, occasional lawyer, and itinerant minister. William Wright had met and married Anna Lloyd Jones (1838/39 – 1923), a county school teacher, the previous year when he was employed as the superintendent of schools for Richland County. Originally from Massachusetts, William Wright had been a Baptist minister, but he later joined his wife’s family in the Unitarian faith. Anna was a member of the large, prosperous and well-known Lloyd Jones family of Unitarians, who had emigrated from Wales to Spring Green, Wisconsin. One of Anna’s brothers was Jenkin Lloyd Jones, who would become an important figure in the spread of the Unitarian faith in the Western United States. Both of Wright’s parents were strong-willed individuals with idiosyncratic interests that they passed on to him. According to his biography his mother declared, when she was expecting her first child, that he would grow up to build beautiful buildings. She decorated his nursery with engravings of English cathedrals torn from a periodical to encourage the infant’s ambition.[citation needed] The family moved to Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1870 for William to minister a small congregation.

In 1876, Anna visited the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia and saw an exhibit of educational blocks created by Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel.

Soon after Wright turned 14, his parents separated. Anna had been unhappy for some time with William’s inability to provide for his family and asked him to leave. The divorce was finalized in 1885 after William sued Anna for lack of physical affection. William left Wisconsin after the divorce and Wright claimed he never saw his father again.[3] At this time Wright changed his middle name from Lincoln to Lloyd in honor of his mother’s family, the Lloyd Joneses. As the only male left in the family, Wright assumed financial responsibility for his mother and two sisters.

Education and work for Silsbee (1885–1888)Wright attended a Madison high school, but there is no evidence he ever graduated.[4] He was admitted to the University of Wisconsin–Madison as a special student in 1886. There he joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity,[5] took classes part-time for two semesters, and worked with a professor of civil engineering, Allan D. Conover.[6]

In 1887, Wright left the school without taking a degree (although he was granted an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University in 1955) and arrived in Chicago in search of employment. As a result of the devastating Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and recent population boom, new development was plentiful in the city. He later recalled that his first impressions of Chicago were that of grimy neighborhoods, crowded streets, and disappointing architecture, yet he was determined to find work. Within days, and after interviews with several prominent firms, he was hired as a draftsman with the architectural firm of Joseph Lyman Silsbee.[7] Wright previously collaborated with Silsbee—accredited as the draftsman and the construction supervisor—on the 1886 Unity Chapel for Wright’s family in Spring Green, Wisconsin.[8] While with the firm, he also worked on two other family projects: the All Souls Church in Chicago for his uncle, Jenkin Lloyd Jones, and the Hillside Home School I in Spring Green for two of his aunts.[9] Other draftsmen who worked for Silsbee in 1887 included future architects Cecil Corwin, George W. Maher, and George G. Elmslie. Wright soon befriended Corwin, with whom he lived until he found a permanent home.

Wright did not get along well with Sullivan’s other draftsmen; he wrote that several violent altercations occurred between them during the first years of his apprenticeship. For that matter, Sullivan showed very little respect for his employees as well.[14] In spite of this, “Sullivan took [Wright] under his wing and gave him great design responsibility.” As an act of respect, Wright would later refer to Sullivan as Lieber Meister (German for “Dear Master”).[15] Wright also formed a bond with office foreman Paul Mueller. Wright would later engage Mueller to build several of his public and commercial buildings between 1903 and 1923.[16]

Wright’s home in Oak Park, IllinoisOn June 1, 1889, Wright married his first wife, Catherine Lee “Kitty” Tobin (1871–1959). The two had met around a year earlier during activities at All Souls Church. Sullivan did his part to facilitate the financial success of the young couple by granting Wright a five-year employment contract. Wright made one more request: “Mr. Sullivan, if you want me to work for you as long as five years, couldn’t you lend me enough money to build a little house?”[17] With Sullivan’s $5,000 loan, Wright purchased a lot at the corner of Chicago and Forest Avenues in the suburb of Oak Park. The existing Gothic Revival house was given to his mother, while a compact Shingle style house was built alongside for Wright and Catherine.

In his autobiography, Wright recounts that he also had a short stint in another Chicago architecture office. Feeling that he was underpaid for the quality of his work for Silsbee (at $8 a week), the young draftsman quit and found work as a designer at the firm of Beers, Clay, and Dutton.

Despite Sullivan’s loan and overtime salary, Wright was constantly short on funds. Wright admitted that his poor finances were likely due to his expensive tastes in wardrobe and vehicles, and the extra luxuries he designed into his house. To compound the problem, Wright’s children – including first born Lloyd (b.1890) and John (b.1892) – would share similar tastes for fine goods.[17][22] To supplement his income and repay his debts, Wright accepted independent commissions for at least nine houses. These “bootlegged” houses, as he later called them, were conservatively designed in variations of the fashionable Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles. Nevertheless, unlike the prevailing architecture of the period, each house emphasized simple geometric massing and contained features such as bands of horizontal windows, occasional cantilevers, and open floor plans which would become hallmarks of his later work. Eight of these early houses remain today including the Thomas Gale, Parker, Blossom, and Walter Gale houses.[23]

As with the residential projects for Adler & Sullivan, Wright designed his bootleg houses on his own time. Sullivan knew nothing of the independent works until 1893, when he recognized that one of the houses was unmistakably a Frank Lloyd Wright design. This particular house, built for Allison Harlan, was only blocks away from Sullivan’s townhouse in the Chicago community of Kenwood. Aside from the location, the geometric purity of the composition and balcony tracery in the same style as the Charnley House likely gave away Wright’s involvement.

After leaving Louis Sullivan, Wright established his own practice on the top floor of the Sullivan designed Schiller Building (1892, demolished 1961) on Randolph Street in Chicago. Wright chose to locate his office in the building because the tower location reminded him of the office of Adler & Sullivan. Although Cecil Corwin followed Wright and set up his architecture practice in the same office, the two worked independently and did not consider themselves partners.[26] Within a year, Corwin decided that he did not enjoy architecture and journeyed east to find a new profession.[27]

With Corwin gone, Wright moved out of the Schiller Building and into the nearby and newly completed Steinway Hall Building. The loft space was shared with Robert C. Spencer, Jr., Myron Hunt, and Dwight H. Perkins.[28] These young architects, inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement and the philosophies of Louis Sullivan, formed what would become known as the Prairie School.[29] They were joined by Perkins apprentice, Marion Mahony, who in 1895 transferred to Wright’s team of drafters and took over production of his presentation drawings and watercolor renderings. Mahony, the first licensed female architect in the United States, also designed furniture, leaded glass windows, and light fixtures, among other features, for Wright’s houses.[30][31] Between 1894 and the early 1910s, several other leading Prairie School architects and many of Wright’s future employees launched their careers in the offices of Steinway Hall.

William H. Winslow House (1893) in River Forest, IllinoisWright’s projects during this period followed two basic models. On one hand, there was his first independent commission, the Winslow House, which combined Sullivanesque ornamentation with the emphasis on simple geometry and horizontal lines that is typical in Wright houses. The Francis Apartments (1895, demolished 1971) Heller House (1896), Rollin Furbeck House (1897), and Husser House (1899, demolished 1926) were designed in the same mode. For more conservative clients, Wright conceded to design more traditional dwellings. These included the Dutch Colonial Revival style Bagley House (1894), Tudor Revival style Moore House I (1895), and Queen Anne style Charles Roberts House (1896).[32] As an emerging architect, Wright could not afford to turn down clients over disagreements in taste, but even his most conservative designs retained simplified massing and occasional Sullivan inspired details.[33]

Soon after the completion of the Winslow House in 1894, Edward Waller, a friend and former client, invited Wright to meet Chicago architect and planner Daniel Burnham.
