The Shaman And The Dreaming Outback

©Renee 2013

Australia. I always wanted to go to this part of the world. When I was very young, I read a book about the area. The setting was around the 1940’s or so, and many people from the U.K and New Zealand had gone there to settle and farm. The writer’s name escapes me but her story focused on “THE DREAMING”

The dreaming and the stories on the subject differ a bit from location to location but basic stories include the honey ant dreaming, kangaroo dreaming etc…like the area you originate from. This is also connected to  a shaman, heavy drug induced states and totem rituals.

http://www.drug-encyclopedia.eu/DW_EN/nightshade.shtml

To the nightshade family (Solanaceae) count some genera, which contain the nightshade drugs atropine and/or hyoscyamine as well as scopolamine to the largest part, partly also independent contents materials exhibit (nicotine in the tobacco, solanine in the nightshade and the green parts of the potato).

Mandrake (Mandragora officinarum)

A nightshade plant occurring in the Mediterranean countries. On earth lying rosette of egg-shaped-oblong sheets and violet blooms. The root becomes long up to 60 cm and contains up to 0,5 % solanaceae alkaloids (atropine and/or (R,S)-hyoscyamine, scopolamine). Charm drug of the antiquity and the Middle Ages, tranquilizer with pain conditions.

Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger)

Strong malicious, belonged to the family of the nightshade plants, 20-80 cm high one year’s herb with oblong sheets and yellow blooms with violet veins, contains L-hyoscyamine (0,06 – 0,17 %), which can already cause heaviest symptoms of intoxication in small quantities up to death in all plant parts of alkaloids, particularly. In the Mediterranean countries the white henbane, Hyoscyamus albus, common, a 10-50 cm high herb with sulfur-yellow, inside low violet colored blooms with same effect as with the black henbane. In the Middle Ages “witches” are to have made flight albums “of henbane”, in order to fly thereby to the block mountain.

Angel trumpet (Brugmansia)

Angel trumpet. © Algeier-FöllNightshade plant out of South America with 20-30 cm long trumpet-similar blooms, planted now also as ornamental plant in European gardens. The chemical active substances are scopolamine and hyoscyamine. The dried sheets and blooms are smoked or taken orally as tea. A half-hour after ingestion it comes to visions and illusions, which can change into hallucinations. These hallucinogenic effects can persist, depending upon dose, between 3 hours and 3 days. Overdosing can lead to symptoms of intoxication (swallowing difficulties, hoarseness, dryness of the mucous membranes, urine barrier, heart lawn) up to deaths by heartbeat disturbances and ventricular fibrillations.

Night shade (Solanum nigrum L.)

All parts of the 10-80cm high plant, with violet blooms, scarlet mature berries, stack, sheets, unripe fruits are strongly poisonous. Poison material is predominantly solanine, which affects strongly attractive the mucous membranes (scratching and burning in the neck). Nausea, vomiting, sweats and headache are reference to a poisoning. In the case of overdosing fear conditions, cramps, heart weakness, heartbeat disturbances, unconsciousness and difficulty in breathing arise. Already 6-10 unripe berries can be deadly for an adult, death occur by a breath paralysis.

Datura (Datura stramonium)

Original from North America coming nightshade plant. 30-120cm high one-year’s herb with 20 cm long sheets, white or violet blooms and stinging leagues fruits. It contains predominantly (S)-hyoscyamine, young plants also scopolamine, thus the hallucinogenic effect outweighs. Physical effects exist in mouth dryness, visual disturbances, disturbance of equilibrium, when overdosing in the worst case in heartbeat disturbances and coma. Already starting from 15 seeds of datura deadly complications are to be expected. 50-150 cm high bush with egg-shaped sheets, violet blooms and in condition black berries mature.

Belladonna (Atropa Belladonna)

Beside the belladonna with black fruits there is a variant with yellow fruits and pale-yellow blooms. It contains in all parts (S)-hyoscyamine with the highest concentration in the sheets (up to 1,5 %), in the fruits 0.7 %. (S)-hyoscyamine serves today also as antidote (remedy) with poisonings by plant protection agents or nerve gases.

Mad herb (Scopolia carniolica)

Up to 60 cm high plant of several years with red-brown, bell-shaped blooms. All plant parts contain the alkaloid (S)-hyoscyamine, leading by poissoning to mouth dryness, skin turning red as well as pupil dilation. The hallucinogenic effect leads to speech urge, hallucinations and epileptic accumulations. With high dosage it can come to deaths by breath paralysis.

In the link above to the mind control post you will find this story. Note a few interesting points she makes:

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread909469/pg30

2) Adam Lanza was dazed, in a trance and may have been going to the school thinking he was just going to see his mother.

4) An older, rich elite gentleman who loves Batman has made a deal with another man to stage this (the words “Shaman”, “Pillowcase”, and “Rubio”, as well as “The General” from the show Prison Break, are associated with this latter man, he is some kind of very high up person whose identity, if revealed, would “cause a war”. She also indicates, “I will say I am am seeing a lot of those ‘Worm’ words and I am trying to focus to see if I could try to write it out. In my mind it seems like cursive lowcase h’s,j’s, and z’s.” This could be the Mossad logo [link to images.search.yahoo.com]

The psychic viewed the first man on a golf course and got the name “Tradewinds” on the back of the golf cart, in green, possibly with a palm tree symbol. “…[H]e looked like he was in his fifties, his hair was so grey it almost looked white and the only thing his friends kept calling him was ‘Bat Wing’. And it was an inside joke of some kind because this guy had an obsession with Batman but it was like they called him Bat Wing just as some joking nickname.”

Again, two separate individuals: one elitist who loves golf and Batman who is doing the groundwork and staging the shootings, and doing it for money, and another who is a very high up individual providing the funding for these ops and doing this more for political reasons.

http://www.drugtext.org/Minorities/pituri-an-australian-aboriginal-drug.html

From link above:

Early references state or imply that pituri consumption was the prerogative of older men of ritual standing, a situation compatible with Aboriginal social practices. Use by women and young men is noted only after extensive Aboriginal contact with missionaries and pastoralists. Since members of both of these groups manipulated pituri supplies for personal advantage, the apparent change in the identity of users may have occurred as a result of the breakdown in traditional distribution patterns.

Aboriginal use of pituri was qualitatively quite different from European utilization of tobacco. In addition to understanding the use of alkali ash to potentiate the action of the drug, Aboriginal people also appreciated the bi-phasic action of nicotine, utilizing it both as stimulant and depressant. At least 15 primary references indicate that pituri was chewed in large enough quantities to achieve radical alterations of consciousness with effects ranging from euphoria through to stupor and catalepsy (Watson 1983:26).

These episodes took place in a social setting, but the meaning this had for participants is unrecorded. There is also some indication of ritualized transdermal application and shamanistic use. While not enough evidence exists to make definitive comparisons and contrasts, certainly the role of pituri is reminiscent of the position of tobacco in what Furst calls the ecstatic complex of the New World (Furst 1976).

Not only did Aboriginal people possess considerable practical knowledge of nicotine as a drug, they also understood it as a constituent of plants. Duboisia hopwoodii, the basis of pituri, grows widely, though very sparsely, throughout the arid Australian interior. Everist (1981) gives the toxic principle as the alkaloids nicotine and nor-nicotine, with various combinations and proportions present in different samples. In an analysis of 70 samples, nicotine varied from 0.0 to 5.3 per cent and nor-nicotine from 0.1 to 4.1 per cent.

However, Aboriginal people only used Duboisia hopwoodii plants from one small area (the Mulligan River) to make pituri, and plants elsewhere were shunned as a source of the drug and used only as an animal poison. Alkaloid identity appears to have been the basis of this choice: plants in the Mulligan area contained nicotine as the dominant alkaloid, while the plants whose use was avoided were rich in the more toxic nor-nicotine. Alkaloidal quantity seems to have been a further criterion; plants rich in nicotine were selected, and only the newer shoots of these were used, the parts highest in nicotine content.

Many tribal peoples cure plants by sun-drying them, but Aboriginal people at the time of conquest also cured the pituri by artificial heat. This is a risky process compared with natural drying, but one with the potential to produce a more stable drug, and accounts suggest that this was the result. Although Aboriginal people were hunter/gatherers, the vast amounts of pituri in circulation indicate that people were cultivating Duboisia hopwoodii in some way, possibly by fire-stick farming.

Control over access to pituri was extremely important. Demand for the drug was high, and during the l9th century people traded pituri over at least ½ million sq. km of territory, a geographical area far greater than the small section of country which produced the cured prepared substance. Some references describe pituri as a currency, and certainly ownership of pituri bestowed power over others, both individuals and groups, with the issues sometimes involving access to women.

Despite the social, economic and political importance of the drug, at the time of initial European/Aboriginal contact use of pituri was mediated by a number of controls. These influenced both demand and supply, and targeted not only the act of consumption itself but also the processes of production and distribution (Watson 1983).

There were controls over demand in that pituri was defined as appropriate for use only in a ceremonial context, and probably only by older men of ritual standing. A common method of controlling drug supply in tribal groups is to restrict access to the means of production including the material instruments of production and the technical knowledge. Aboriginal people utilized this strategy by allowing production only by old men with ritual standing who possessed a monopoly on knowledge. The exact location of suitable and socially-sanctioned Duboisia hopwoodii plants was a closely-guarded secret, and information about the techniques of artificial drying was also restricted. Records from the 19th century indicate that younger males would attempt to cure the plant for their own use but would fail because of lack of technical knowledge and unfamiliarity about the correct plants to use. A further restriction on pituri supplies arose from limiting the number of sources from which the drug could be obtained; thus pituri was distributed only by totemic clans whose rights to the drug were religiously based.

Some information on the area:

http://www.diamantina.qld.gov.au/web/guest/history

On the 29th April 1886, the Divisional Board of Diamantina was formed in Birdsville. The first meeting of the Diamantina Shire Council was held on 13 June 1903, in Bedourie.

Diamantina Shire lies in the region known as the Channel Country in far southwestern Queensland Australia. It covers an area of 95,000 sq km or twice the size of Tasmania or Denmark.

The Channel Country River Systems

The Diamantina and Georgina Rivers, Cooper and Eyre Creeks are the main players of a network of western Queensland Rivers. These three great river systems draw water from an area of 566,000 square kilometres. In the regular dry periods these systems contain numerous waterholes that can vary in depth and length. But after rain, the network links together, stretching out over the floodplain like fingers, hence the name Channel Country.

The explanation for the watercourses being known by different names at different points and for ‘rivers’ to become ‘creeks’ lies within the history of the regions exploration.

Sturt encountered the combined channels of the Mulligan and Georgina Rivers in 1845 in South Australia and named then Eyre Creek. In 1876 W.O. Hodgkinson (later Member for Burke) explored the Mulligan within Queensland and named it after the famous Queensland prospector, James Venture Mulligan.

Similar circumstances lead to Cooper Creek named by Sturt in 1845 being called the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers by Kennedy and Gregory respectively.

Landsborough was responsible for naming the Diamantina River after Lady Diamantina Roma Bowen, the wife of the first governor of Queensland but earlier McKinlay had variously called this stream Burke’s Creek and Mualler River.

The Georgina was first called the Herbert River by Landsborough but was altered to avoid confusion with the Herbert River in northwest Queensland.

The Shire Towns

The settlements of the remote sparsely populated shire began in the 1880’s when the towns of Birdsville, Bedourie and later Betoota were formed to service newly taken up pastoral holdings.

The towns of the Diamantina Shire contain some amazing examples of early settlement in the region. Interpretive panels in Birdsville allow visitors to the area to step back in time as they wander among these relics of a bygone era.

The Explorers

European expeditions began in earnest with the South Australian Government wanting to know what lay in the centre of Australia. The first white party to penetrate the area was lead by Charles Sturt (Sturt Stony Desert) who was attempting to reach the centre of the continent from Menindie NSW. He was forced back by extreme drought and heat in December 1845, but he did discover Eyre Creek, naming it after his friend and fellow explorer Edward John Eyre (Lake Eyre). He also named Cooper Creek after an Adelaide Barrister who later became Chief Justice of South Australia.

Burke and Wills (1860-61) traversed the western edge of the area from South to North but the main result of their expedition was the stimulus to exploration caused by their disappearance, the Burke River, north of Boulia is a memorial of their epic journey.

In 1868, John Costello traced and named Farrar’s Creek after Jack Farrar, then Head Stockman on Kyabra Station, Quilpie. He later took up various properties in the Diamantina Shire including: Mt Leonard, Mooraberrie and in 1873 Monkira.

In 1878 W.O. Hodgkinson, who earlier had accompanied McKinlay was sent by the then Queensland Governor to explore the western edge of the region, he traced the Mulligan River and discovered the Toko Range.

*NOTE* From above again:

Similar circumstances lead to Cooper Creek named by Sturt in 1845 being called the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers by Kennedy and Gregory respectively.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Thumb_Food_%26_Pharmacy

Tom Thumb was founded in 1948 by J.R. Bost and Robert B. Cullum as Tom Thumb-Page Food Stores and was once a publicly traded company on the NYSE under the name Cullum Companies. By 1956 it had grown to 20 stores. They bought 34 Hinky Dinky stores in the Midwest, 17 Pantry Food Markets in California, as well as Page Drug Stores (the freestanding Page stores were later sold to Eckerd). They also bought the gourmet specialty Simon David stores in 1963.

Tom Thumb expanded its reach to Austin, Texas, in 1972 when the grocer entered that market.

Tom Thumb partnered with Wal-Mart in 1987 to create Hypermart USA stores, but the initial lack of success led them to drop out in 1991. There were several Hypermart locations including Garland, Texas, and Arlington, Texas. The Hypermart stores were the early prototype for the current Walmart supercenter concept, though these stores were much larger than today’s Supercenter.

In January 1989, Cullum Companies sold six of its Tom Thumb stores in Austin to Albertsons.

The company was acquired by the Randall’s Food Markets chain of Houston in 1992 and adopted a logo similar to Randall’s, but retained the Tom Thumb name. Randall’s converted the seven Tom Thumb stores in the Austin market to Randall’s in January 1994, the same time it acquired and converted nine AppleTree Markets. The Simon David in the Arboretum Market was not converted, but it would close in December 1996 and would be converted into a Saks Fifth Avenue. Though after many customers lamented the loss of Austin’s only Simon David, Randall’s decided in 1998 to make its Bee Caves store a Flagship Randall’s supermarket, the first in the city and the eighth in the chain.

In 1999 Randall’s Food Markets was acquired by Safeway. Safeway retained the Randall’s name in Houston and Austin and the Tom Thumb name in Dallas/Fort Worth, but replaced many of the Tom Thumb/Randall’s “Remarkable” house brands with Safeway-label items. Randall’s Food Markets became Safeway’s Texas division, which today is legally known as Randall’s Food & Drugs.

By 2001, Randall’s operated 69 stores in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area under the Tom Thumb and Simon David banners.

In early 2005, Safeway was rumored to be attempting to sell the then 138-store Randall’s division

Tom Thumb Food & Pharmacy is a chain of supermarkets in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Tom Thumb stores operate under the names Tom Thumb—traditional grocery stores; Flagship Tom Thumb—high end stores; and Simon David—also high end, usually in affluent areas. Tom Thumb and Randall’s Food Markets make up the 112-store Texas division of Safeway Inc. Tom Thumb is (as of December 2005) the number three supermarket in the super-competitive Dallas/Fort Worth area (in terms of market share) behind Walmart and Kroger. Stores in the Tom Thumb supermarket chain tend to be slightly more upscale and expensive than competitors such as Kroger or Albertsons.

Baker Hughes is the combination of many companies that have developed and introduced technology to serve the petroleum service industry. Their combined history dates back to the early 1900s. During its history, Baker Hughes has acquired and assimilated numerous oilfield pioneers including: Brown Oil Tools, CTC, EDECO, and Elder Oil Tools (completions); Milchem and Newpark (drilling fluids); EXLOG (mud logging); Eastman Christensen and Drilex (directional drilling and diamond drill bits); Teleco (measurement while drilling); Tri-State and Wilson (fishing tools and services); Aquaness, Chemlink and Petrolite (specialty chemicals), Western Atlas (seismic exploration, well logging), BJ Services Company (pressure pumping). The Hughes Tool Company was founded by Walter Benona Sharp and Howard R. Hughes, Sr., father of Howard Hughes, Jr. In 1908, Howard Hughes, Sr. and his partner Walter Sharp, developed the first two-cone drill bit, designed to enable rotary drilling in harder, deeper formations than was possible with earlier fishtail bits. They conducted two secret tests on a drilling rig in Goose Creek, Texas. Each time, Hughes asked the drilling crew to leave the rig floor, pulled the bit from a locked wooden box, and then his associates ran the bit into the hole. The drill pipe twisted off on the first test, but the second was extremely successful. In 1909, the Sharp & Hughes bit was granted a U.S. patent. In the same year, the partners formed the Sharp-Hughes Tool Company in Houston, Texas to manufacture the bit in a rented space measuring 20 by 40 ft (12 m)After Walter Sharp died in 1912, Mr. Hughes purchased Sharp’s half of the business. The company was renamed Hughes Tool Company in 1915. Through the 1950s and 1960s, Hughes Tool Company remained a private enterprise, owned by Howard Hughes, Jr. While Mr. Hughes was engaged in his Hollywood and aviation enterprises, managers in Houston, such as Fred Ayers and Maynard Montrose. This post covers the Hughes, dit la Fortune (Fontaine), Smith, Chesney, Lagrenne, Black, Picard, Parrot(Parrott) and Picard family. Next, we will look closer at Australia. It’s areas, leaders and other connections.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Gillard

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_Australia

The Prime Minister of Australia is the highest minister of the Crown, leader of the Cabinet and head of government, holding office on commission from the Governor-General of Australia. The office of Prime Minister is, in practice, the most powerful political office in Australia. Despite being at the apex of executive government in the country, the office is not mentioned in the Constitution of Australia specifically and exists through an unwritten political convention.

Barring exceptional circumstances, the prime minister is always the leader of the political party or coalition with majority support in the House of Representatives. The only case where a senator was appointed prime minister was that of John Gorton, who subsequently resigned his Senate position and was elected as a member of the House of Representatives (Senator George Pearce was acting prime minister for seven months in 1916 while Billy Hughes was overseas).

Julia Gillard is the current Prime Minister, leader of the Australian Labor Party, and the first female Prime Minister of Australia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Gardner_(anthropologist)

Robert Gardner (born November 5, 1925 in Brookline, Massachusetts) is an American academic, anthropologist and a documentary filmmaker, who was the Director of the Film Study Center at Harvard University from 1957 to 1997. Starting in 1950s, he is known for his work in the field of visual anthropology and films like Dead Birds (1965) and Forest of Bliss (1986), in 2011, a retrospective of his work was held at Film Forum, New York.

He was the sixth child and third son, born in the home of his grandmother Isabella Stewart Gardner. After receiving his graduating with Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1947, he became an assistant to archaeologist and the founder of the Byzantine Institute of America, Thomas Whittemore at Harvard’s Fogg Museum. This led to travels to Anatolia, Fayum and London working with Coptic textiles and restoring Byzantine art Next, he started teaching medieval art and history at the College of Puget Sound in Washington state. Here, he took to writings of anthropologist Ruth Benedict and he ended up post doing MA in anthropology from Harvard. It was during his graduation period that he took part in an expedition on Kalahari Desert Bushmen, for which he took photographs, films and carried out elementary research work. Thereafter he founded The Film Study Center, a production and research unit at the Peabody Museum at Harvard in 1957. Here it made documentary films till he left the centre in 1997.

He now lives in Cambridge, MA with wife, Adele Pressman, a psychiatrist and two children Caleb and Noah Gardner.

The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology now gives the Harvard University’s ‘Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography’ worth $US50,000

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalahari_Desert

The Kalahari Desert (in Afrikaans “Dorsland”, meaning “thirst land” or “thirsty land”) is a large semi-arid sandy savannah in Southern Africa extending 900,000 square kilometres (350,000 sq mi), covering much of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa. A semi-desert, with huge tracts of excellent grazing after good rains, the Kalahari supports more animals and plants than a true desert, such as the Namib Desert to the west. There are small amounts of rainfall and the summer temperature is very high. It usually receives 3–7.5 inches (76–190 mm) of rain per year. The surrounding Kalahari Basin covers over 2,500,000 square kilometres (970,000 sq mi) extending farther into Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, and encroaching into parts of Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Back to Australia again:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimberley_Plan

The Kimberley Plan, or Kimberley Scheme, was a failed plan by the Freeland League to resettle Jewish refugees from Europe before and during the Holocaust.

The League, led by Isaac Nachman Steinberg, selected the Kimberley region in Australia in hope to buy an area of 7 million acres (28,000 km²) of agricultural land for 75,000 Jews fleeing Europe. Steinberg based his campaign on the officially declared need to populate northern Australia. On 23 May 1939 he arrived in Perth and by early 1940 gained substantial public support, but also encountered opposition.

On 15 July 1944 the Prime Minister of Australia John Curtin informed Steinberg that the Australian government would not “depart from the long-established policy in regard to alien settlement in Australia” and could not “entertain the proposal for a group settlement of the exclusive type contemplated by the Freeland League.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimberley,_Northern_Cape

Kimberley is the capital of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The city has considerable historical significance due its diamond mining past and the siege during the Second Boer War. Notable personalities such as Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato made their fortunes here, and the roots of the De Beers company can also be traced to the early days of the mining town.

Wiki link above on DeBeers:

De Beers are a family of companies that dominate the diamond, diamond mining, diamond hops, diamond trading and industrial diamond manufacturing sectors. De Beers is active in every category of industrial diamond mining: open-pit, underground, large-scale alluvial, coastal and deep sea. Mining takes place in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Canada.

The company was founded by Cecil Rhodes, who was financed by Alfred Beit and Rothschild. In 1927, Ernest Oppenheimer, a German Jewish immigrant to Britain who had earlier founded mining giant Anglo American plc with American financier J.P. Morgan managed to wrest control of the empire, building and consolidating the company’s global monopoly over the diamond industry until his retirement. During this time, he was involved in a number of controversies, including price fixing, antitrust behaviour and an allegation of not releasing industrial diamonds for the US war effort during World War II.

Clark University was founded by American businessman Jonas Gilman Clark in 1887. He started the university with a million dollars, and later added another million dollars to the fund because he feared the university might someday face a lack of funds. It was opened on October 2, 1889 as the first all-graduate university in the United States.

G. Stanley Hall was the first president of the university. He was the founder of the American Psychological Association and earned the first Ph.D. in psychology in the United States at Harvard. Clark has played a prominent role in the development of psychology as a distinguished discipline in the United States ever since. It was the location for Sigmund Freud‘s famous “Clark Lectures” in 1909, introducing psychoanalysis to the U.S. Clark celebrated the centennial of the visit in October 2009. A seated sculpture of Freud by Robert Shure is just outside the University Center; students pose with it and dress it up.

Franz Boas, founder of American cultural anthropology and advisor for the first Ph.D. in anthropology, taught at Clark between 1888 and 1892 before resigning (in a dispute with Hall over academic freedom) and moving to Columbia University. Albert Abraham Michelson, the first American to receive a Nobel Prize in Physics, best known for his involvement in the Michelson-Morley experiment, which measured the speed of light, served as a professor from 1889 to 1892. In the 1920s Robert Goddard, a pioneer of rocketry, considered one of the founders of space and missile technology, served as chairman of the Physics Department. The Robert H. Goddard Library, a distinctive modern building by architect John M. Johansen was completed in 1969.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abby_Aldrich_Rockefeller

Abby Greene Aldrich Rockefeller (October 26, 1874 – April 5, 1948) was a prominent American socialite and philanthropist and the second-generation matriarch of the renowned Rockefeller family. Referred to as the “woman in the family”, she was especially noteworthy for being the driving force behind the establishment of the Museum of Modern Art, on 53rd Street in New York, in November 1929.

She was born Abigail “Abby” Greene Aldrich in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of the influential Senator Nelson Wilmarth Aldrich, chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, and the former Abby Pearce Truman Chapman, a distant descendant of the fourth signer of the Mayflower Compact.

Her sister, Lucy Aldrich, who was nearly completely deaf (at the time thought because of a childhood bout of scarlet fever, now believed to be the result of waardenburg syndrome, a genetic anomaly found in several generations of the Aldrich family), would be one of her closest friends throughout their lives, and is believed to have fostered Abby’s interest in American folk art.[citation needed]

Her early education came at the hands of Quaker governesses. In 1891, aged 18, she enrolled at the Miss Abbott’s School for Young Ladies in Providence, Rhode Island. While there she studied English composition and literature, French, German, art history and ancient history, gymnastics, and dancing. She graduated in 1893 and made her debut in November 1893. On June 30, 1894, she sailed for Liverpool, beginning a lifetime of extensive European and later Asian travel. The aesthetic education she gained from abroad, initially fostered by her father, helped to inform her future discernment as an art collector. This initial four-month sojourn included the countries of England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France.

In the fall of 1894 she met her future husband, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., the sole son and scion of the wealthy oil industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, at a friend’s house in Providence. They went through a protracted engagement, during which they were invited for a trip to Cuba in 1900, on President William McKinley‘s yacht. They finally married on October 9, 1901, in the major society wedding of the Gilded Age, in front of around a thousand of the elite personages of the time, at her father’s summer home in Warwick Neck, Kent County, Rhode Island.

They became the parents of six children, including the famed five “Rockefeller Brothers” – and established the renowned six-generation-strong business/philanthropic/banking/real estate dynasty:

Elizabeth Mooney Kirk (February 23 1914 – June 29 2004) (known by many as Betty) spent her entire life advancing adult literacy. She worked with Frank Laubach using his “Each One Teach One” reading method. She traveled and taught in India, Africa and the United States. While working in Kenya, she provided the financial support for Barack Obama, Sr. to come to the United States to study.

Kirk co-authored many books with Dr. Frank Laubach and son Dr. Robert Laubach, which are still in use for teaching adults to read English. In this role, her work included running a mission boarding school in India and for two years she was head of a project for the British Government in Kenya training teachers and adults to read in some of the tribal languages.

Kirk often helped find sponsorships for promising Kenyan students to study in the United States. An article by Michael Dobbs in The Washington Post states that Kirk provided most of the financial support during Obama Sr’s early years in the United States, according to the Tom Mboya archives at Stanford University. Kirk is also mentioned in Barack Obama‘s 1995 book, Dreams from My Father (pg 427 hardcover) as writing college recommendation letters for Obama Sr.

Kirk’s grandfather was Addison Clark who, with his brother, founded the Addran Male and Female Academy which became Texas Christian University. She earned master’s degrees from George Washington University and Syracuse University. In 1960, she married Elmer LeValley Kirk. They lived for a time in West Africa before moving to California. Kirk taught school in the Oakland area for many years before retiring to central California.

his son Paul and his wife Princess Katherine of Greece, (right to left)2

Marina zu Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Princess of Greece and Denmark was born on 30 November 1906 at Athens, Greece.1 She was the daughter of Nicholaos zu Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Prince of Greece and Denmark and Elena Vladimirovna Romanov, Grand Duchess of Russia.3 She married George Edward Alexander Edmund Windsor, 1st Duke of Kent, son of George V Windsor, King of the United Kingdom and Mary Prinzessin von Teck, on 29 November 1934 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, England.1 She died on 27 August 1968 at age 61 at Kensington Palace, Kensington, London, England, from a brain tumour.4 She was buried on 30 August 1968 at Kent Mausoleum, Frogmore House, Windsor, Berkshire, England.4
She gained the title of HRH Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark on 30 November 1906. As a result of her marriage, Marina zu Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, Princess of Greece and Denmark was styled as Duchess of Kent on 29 November 1934. She was invested as a Imperial Order of the Crown of India (C.I.) in 1937.5 She was invested as a Dame Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) in 1937.5 She was invested as a Dame Commander, Royal Victorian Order (D.C.V.O.).5 She was invested as a Dame of Grace, Order of St. John of Jerusalem (D.G.St.J.).5 She was godmother for Hon. James Edward Lascelles at his baptism on 27 December 1953 at All Saints’ Church, Harewood, Yorkshire, England.6
Until her marriage in 1934, the glamourous Princess Marina of Greece spent an adventurous but little publicized childhood in her homeland and 12 years in exile with her family. She is descended from both the Greek and Russian royal families. No less artistic, inteligent and headstrong than her husband, she and Prince George came to dominate London society. Despite the dual responsibilities of her work for many charities and of raising her children, Marina was always a resourceful woman with a jest for life which her widowhood did nothing to diminish.
