Karen Bunche Pierce, a daughter of Burton A. Pierce of Riverdale, the Bronx, and the late Jane Bunche Pierce, was married in New York yesterday to Pierre Monte Sutton, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy E. Sutton of New York and Goshen, N.Y. Justice George Donald Covington of State Supreme Court in Manhattan officiated at Tavern on the Green.
Mrs. Sutton, a graduate of the Fieldston School and Tufts University, is a media supervisor at the New York advertising agency of Backer Spielvogel Bates. Her father, formerly a vice president of the Battery Park City Authority, is the president of his own consulting firm, DKP Associates in New York.
The bride is a granddaughter of the late Ralph J. Bunche, the United Nations Under Secretary for Special Political Affairs who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950. She is a niece of Samuel R. Pierce of New York, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Reagan Administration.
Mr. Sutton, known as Pepe, attended the University of Toledo. He is the president of Inner City Broadcasting, and its holdings include the Apollo Theater and WBLS-FM and WLIB-AM, all in New York. His father, the company’s chairman, is a former Manhattan Borough President. The bridegroom’s previous marriage ended in divorce.

Marvin Pierce was born in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania to Scott Pierce and Mabel Marvin. Marvin was a 1916 graduate of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. His ancestor, an early New England colonist, was also an ancestor of Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States. At Miami University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, he was nicknamed “Monk” and was a stand-out athlete in football, basketball, baseball and tennis. On 23 September 1949, Pauline was killed in an automobile accident in Harrison, Westchester County, New York, when Marvin, who was driving the car, lost control as he reached over to stop a cup of hot coffee from sliding across the seat onto his wife. The car crashed into a tree on Purchase St, killing Pauline instantly at 8:12 a.m. She was 53 years old.
Their third child Barbara Pierce, later became the wife of the 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush and mother of the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush.
Pierce’s second marriage (June 1952) was to Willa Gray Martin (1911-2006), an artist and Associated Press reporter.
